Povero: No politics involved in pace of Stewart investigation

With an unprecedented amount of attention focused on the Tony Stewart investigation, many are eager to know the outcome amid calls by some that politics might play a part in the report's release.

As the probe into the Aug. 9 crash at Canandaigua Motorsports Park drags into its fourth week, the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office is refusing calls and Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero said reporter inquiries are coming from as far away as Japan...

Some are already drawing conclusions — about whether Stewart will face charges and whether the political race between Povero and his challenger, ex-road patrol deputy Rodney Miller, has any bearing on the investigation.

“Povero is using it as a political tool,” Miller said of the investigation. Miller forced a Republican primary with Povero, a Democrat, who was endorsed by the Ontario County Republican Committee.

Miller said announcing the outcome of the investigation will be timed to give Povero an advantage with voters.

“My gut feeling is it will be announced before the primary election,” Miller said Tuesday.

Jeff Marinelli, an Ontario County resident and Miller supporter, said he thinks the timing of wrapping up the investigation might be politically motivated. “I can’t think why it is taking so long ... There might be ulterior motives,” he said.

Povero, in a separate interview Tuesday, denied the charges.

It was an accident.... yeah that’s the ticket, it was just an unavoidable accident. Honest.

OK let’s look at it this way:

Somebody get in a wreck on the Highway, They get out of the car and walk in to a lane of traffic that is still moving at speed and get hit.

Who is at fault?

No doubt the dead guy is at fault, at least partially. But having watched stewart put quite a few other drivers into the wall or infield I’d have to say he’s a loose cannon out there. It will be most interesting to see what come of the investigation.

Years ago when I lived in southern Arizona....we had a motorcycle accident near the base, and the biker had actually laid down the bike the right way....banged his head on the pick-up that he ran into...helmet absorbed the hit....then got up and had no real scratches or anything. It was a very lucky accident....then 45 seconds later....some other guy came along the street...didn’t grasp the biker standing there in the lane, and hit him. If the biker had just walked ten feet over....he would have been ok, and the whole thing would have just been a lucky break. I see this accident in the same way....if the guy had walked twenty feet in opposite direction, Stewart never hits him.

If your race car is involved in an accident and can’t be driven, the driver should remain in his car until the emergency teams arrive — unless the car is on fire or leaking fuel.

It was an accident. I don’t care for Stewart as a driver, but there is no way he hit him on purpose.

The driver before Stewart came around nearly hit him. Ward got too close without thinking about that rear tire that sticks out past the car body, a fatal mistake.

There was nothing Stewart could do to avoid him at that point.

So you are saying that Tony Stewart is the ONLY Race Car Driver to EVER “put” another Driver into the wall.

I think not.

This whole thing is based on eventually just how much $$$$ can the lawyers/family get out of Tony.

I don’t give a rats a$$ about the “politics” of this.

When one drives a Race car they know the possible outcome. It is no secret. Do a search on Race Car Driver deaths, they have been happening since the start of Racing.

Do the same for Fans that got killed.

Every Ticket to a Race has a Disclaimer on it.

So does the paperwork that Drivers fill out and sign.

BTW, I am truly sorry and have and will continue to Pray for the Ward Family and Tony Stewart.

This has taken it’s toll on All involved.

I was not at the Track when this happened and am pretty sure that You were not also.

I could care less about these people running for “office” this is pure bullshit to drag politics into it.

But we are talking about new york state so it’s all about who can smear the other better and get elected.

Would you feel better if We had say Sheriff Joe from AZ do the investigation?

Or you could suggest another Sheriff if you like.

No no, just want the truth to come out. Hard to believe Stewart could not have avoided him. I’m not interested in the politics at all. I think the scared look on Stewarts face said it all. This was not the look of a man that just had an unavoidable accident. Just my take on it, and I respect everyones opinion. I hope the investigation is a fair one. That is all.

OK

Just a few more things to consider:

Night Race
Poor Track lighting
Kevin Ward has on a black Nomex Drivers Suit
Have You ever seen the view from the seat of a Sprint Car?
They have a panel on the right side of the Cockpit to block flying dirt form the other cars.
As far as “the look” the Shock of what just happened is what you see IMO.

If somebody will fund it lets put 10 people in the same conditions with no prior knowledge of what may be just about to happen and roll a remote control mannequin out in the same conditions and record what happens and the looks on faces after.

And yes I agree All that is needed is the truth and a non-biased investigation. The Sheriff asked in the very start of this for any and all video/pics and for anybody that is familiar with this type of Racing and Cars to contact the Sheriff Department.

This is just stupid, it was an accident and they just need to move on. Even if Tony did throttled up to scare the guy he did not intentionally hit him. Strapped in a race car with a helmet on, no mirrors, roll bars, at night, etc. how is the driver going to know a person is still approaching the car from the rear.
I am sure in hindsight, Tony wished he had drove towards the infield when he saw the driver on the track approaching him. It was an accident with many contributing factors and Tony and others will have to live with this the rest of their lives.

This is a moot point, since the Republican primary was held yesterday and Povero didn’t announce the investigation results right before it in order to give himself an advantage. He still stomped Miller by a 78% to 22% margin.
