Nissan claims that globally the Leaf has 45% market share.
When GM contacted us about the bid for the electric motor, they estimated 40,000. Our CEO laughed and told GM they wouldn’t sell 10,000 and he declined to bid. He was right.

GM has to persist with the Volt, to please Uncle Sugar.
Is there one motor per wheel?
If only the Volt were a convertible. They’d sell hundreds of them.
I’m curious - how does Nissan provide the ‘free charging’?
Do you park at the dealership...do they give you a check?
The Volt leases are already coming back and causing a problem from GM. Predictably, the re-sale value on an overpriced car, which includes a huge battery with a definite shelf life, is very low:

$14,871 was the avg price for 2-3 year old Volts....or 65% depreciation in 2-3 years.
Volkswagen made the Vanagon.
Obama Motors should make a clone and call it the Obamagon.
They would be useful when we are all living a a van down by the river in Obamavilles.
Lol,no.
The RFQ stated a target of 40,000 vehicles. GM only used the 10,000 number aafter the first batch of orders turned out to be very “soft”. At the time, we invested $25 million on a production line for their only other hybrid and got SCREWED by both GM demand and their purchasing duplicity.
We used to have one of those when I was a kid. Pretty cool, but seriously underpowered with a family of 5 aboard. Cross winds are a bitch too. You probably don’t want to have a serious accident in one either.
On the other hand, LEAFs are everywhere around Atlanta. I see at least a dozen as I drive mine to work each day. (Of course, the “free lease for 2 years” $5000 GA tax credit helps).
Over 500,000 Mustangs were built in 1965. 1964 was only a 1/2 year for mustang production.
Still more impressive numbers.....................
New TSLA in 15 as well
I personally know 4 people who bought Leaf’s as 2nd cars in the last 6 months. And because of the cost and tax credits they are paying about $75/month for them.
I live in Atlanta as well.
For “free charging” Nissan gives owners a credit card to be used at commercial charging stations. The 3 people in my office don’t charge their cars at home, they charge it at our commercial fast charger in our parking lot and “charge” Nissan.
It all makes ZERO economic sense. Only to Obama would the numbers add up. My engineering manager has one. He is as “anti green” as someone can get, but if someone is going to pay you to drive their car to work....
If I didn’t have an $2000 car that I love, that gets 29mpg to drive to work everyday , I’d be driving a Leaf on Nissan’s (and the taxpayer’s) dime. If a company wants to go out of business by giving me money, I’m not going to stand in their way.
LOL! Considering there were about 45 million new vehicles sold in the US during the same time period I would put this in the category of massive FAIL!
$208 a month for 3 years...on a $29k car.
I’d say Nissan loses at least $8,000 when it gets these back.
And the range limitations probably make it difficult to go over on mileage, so Nissan can’t get the money back that way either.
I have to admit, $208 a month with no fuel costs is tempting. Financially impossibly for Nissan to do forever, but tempting. I drive too far everyday though.
Geeze, using Nissan’s own estimates of $550/15k miles...they’re paying $1,100 for the juice too.
