E stonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves says his country wants NATO to set up permanent bases on its territory to protect it against potential threats from Russia.
Ilves said on September 2, "We should not have NATO with two-tier countries: with NATO permanent bases and without. This is the wrong signal to send to the potential aggressor."
The Baltic countries in NATO - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - have grown increasingly concerned about potential threats from neighboring Russia as the crisis has escalated in Ukraine, where the West says Russia has sent troops and military equipment to help separatists fighting the government.
U.S. President Barack Obama is due to arrive in Estonia on September 2 for meetings with Baltic leaders before traveling to a NATO summit in Wales.
At the September 4-5 summit, NATO is expected to unveil plans for expand its military infrastructure near Russia's borders.

I personally expect Russia to start making territorial demands on the Baltic states before the end of the year. I’ll also be surprised if the Russians don’t start making cross-border incursions within the month just to make Obama look bad.

Russia already buzzed Riga, Latvia with bombers and naval vessels in their harbor this past week.
Estonia’s no doubt a nice place - but why should the USA be responsible for their security?
We did not put weapons closer to USSR a few years ago, what did that get us? One suggestion I have heard is move more of our German facilities to “Kurdistan” and Turkey, and allow Kurds to take ethnic territory in Syria and Iran. Keep Turkey happy with extra income from more US facilities.

NATO is a military alliance to protect the free world from the Russians.
Estonia should raise its defence spending over 2% of GDP and start pulling its weight. Currently, only Britain and France spend over 2% of GDP on defence, and the US over 4%.
So....the US southern border is wide open, and you think we should be protecting Estonia? NATO lost all credibility when it bombed Khaddafi after he defeated the rebels. NATO has become the military enforcer for global banking interests.

It should be replaced with a military alliance that includes Russia to protect the free world from the Islamists. Presiding over such an alliance should be someone with smarts like Putin.

Weird, you want the US to pull out of NATO, and do what, bring everyone home so that our nuke sub operators, air force, and paratroopers can apply for the Border Patrol?
One thing I heard is keep our noses out from where we don’t belong. Nothing there worth Americans dieing for.
