President Lincoln once said to an over-cautious general, If you are not using the army, I should like to borrow it for a short while.
After Obamas latest press conference, I think we might need to say, to our disengaged, apathetic commander-in-chief: if youre not using the presidency, would you mind if we borrowed it?
When asked what he intended to do about the biggest foreign policy crisis of the moment, the rise of the Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) in Iraq and Syria, here is what the commander-in-chief had to say.
"I dont want to put the cart before the horse. We dont have a strategy yet. I think what Ive seen in some of the news reports suggests that folks are getting a little further ahead of where were at than we currently are. And I think thats not just my assessment, but the assessment of our military, as well. We need to make sure that weve got clear plans, that were developing them. At that point, I will consult with Congress and make sure that their voices are heard. But theres no point in me asking for action on the part of Congress before I know exactly what it is that is going to be required for us to get the job done."
Surely, isnt this is an emergency? With the Islamic State hacking off the heads of American journalists, planning attacks with weapons of mass destruction and spreading its influence to Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Philippines, we have to act quickly, dont we? Nah, it can wait until after Obamas golf vacation, and then until after Congress gets back from its recess, and then for who knows how long.

AS much as I despise the damage Lincoln wreaked on the Constitution — gotta admit he sure had a way with words!
