A joint session of parliament is to be held in Pakistan as PM Nawaz Sharif seeks to rally support against protestors calling for his resignation.

Clashes between security forces and demonstrators continued for a third day on Monday in the capital Islamabad.

The army has denied suggestions it is backing anti-government groups, insisting it is "apolitical".

Mr. Sharif-who was elected last year-has said he is determined to protect democracy and will not resign.

Opposition cleric Tahir ul-Qadri has insisted that Mr. Sharif should step down to face murder charges and a terrorism probe.

Mr. Quadri is supported by another opposition politician, Imran Khan-who argues that the June 2013 elections were rigged.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says police were deployed in strength late on Monday as the government resumed negotiations with Mr. Qadri and Mr. Khan.....

Pakistan that gave the world the Taliban who gave a home to Al Quaeda in Afghanistan is going through political turmoil with the military and ISI intelligence agency that birthed the Taliban in the shadows.

This pot of trouble has been brewing under the radar of bigger stories like ISIS, Ukraine, rockets on Israel and so on......

Something much like the Taliban may well come out of this. Frankly, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened earlier.

Can't India (and China/Russia) get this straightened out?

We certainly know that Lurch is immobilized (intellectually).

I just heard the unmistakable islamic toilet flushing and can visualize the turds circling the bowl waiting thier turn to race away to the sewer.

Not that Pakistan was great before. This might make it official.

If India perceives a serious threat, they will deal with it so we’ll have to wait and see what comes out of this.

Good post — this is super-serious, given Pak’s nukes and nuclear technology.

From what I understand, all are products of Saudi madrassas, funded as a way to buy off their wahabbist clerics.

Is he financed by outside forces to try to change Pakistan....an interesting possibility?

The army still has the final say in the country, that’s one thing for sure....

Let’s extract ourselves militarily and monetarily from this latest (oh no…another crisis!) iteration of a foreign entanglement and see how this plays out without us.

The variants of the “religion of peace” (/sarcasm) have enough manpower and weaponry to defeat those (like ISIS) who have hijacked (/sarcasm) the “religion of peace” (/sarcasm) Let them duke/nuke it out.

What is even more worrisome, is that if Pakistan falls to unchecked islamic terrorism, then they will have access to nukes.

Wonderful.

Is certain the answering machine is on at the White House and there will be nobody to answer the call there, thus on to plan C.
