Declining Teen Births: Finally, Abstinence Triumphs!
American Thinker ^ | 08/28/2014 | Janice Shaw Crouse

The latest information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates continued dramatic declines in teen births, but the “news” regarding the CDC report is the general acknowledgement that abstinence efforts are contributing to the decline in teen births. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) explained: “The declines in teen birth rates reflect a number of behavioral changes, including decreased sexual activity, increases in the use of contraception at first sex and at most recent sex, and the adoption and increased use of hormonal contraception, injectables, and intrauterine devices.” [Notice that abortion is not mentioned at all; an acknowledgement that abortion rates are declining.]

Heretofore, the official line has been that abortion and birth control have been the driving forces in the decline in teen births. The facts, though, have been consistently pointed out (here, here, here, here and here) that both contraception and abortion have been constants throughout the time periods covered by CDC and that the new factor in the equation is more effective and widespread abstinence education. The facts about the success of the more sophisticated abstinence campaigns are further developed in two major reports (here and here).

Finally, the CDC’s National Survey of Family Growth, acknowledges (as our analyses of the data have shown) that “the proportion of teen girls and women who are ‘sexually experienced’ has been falling for 20 years.”

My analysis of the CDC data in the following graphs documents dramatic downward trends: the birthrate for girls under 15 has declined by 79 percent since the peak in 1990, the unwed birthrate for girls 15 to 17 has declined by 62 percent from the peak in 1994,

I’d like to think so, but more likely it’s because they are now handing out birth control like JuJuBees.

Agreed. It isn't a new found morality. Teens are more sexualized than ever.

There is NOTHING wrong with “teen births”. The problem is OUT OF WEDLOCK births.

My mother was a teen mother. Married in at 18 and two months, delivered at 19 and one month. VERY common in the comparatively stable ‘50s.

Agreed. If this guy thinks teens are being abstinent he clearly doesn’t know any teens.

Nope, the experts are missing the real cause. Teen births are down because of video games. Get an X-Box, and your kid will never leave the house.

The shy, studious, nerdy, religious types my kids hang out with don’t want to get involved with sex until they’re older.

Maybe their hormones haven’t fully kicked in yet, but I think they also have had good parents who have made their expectations clear.

BTW, my kids are in public school, so they know promiscuous people, but they think they are losers.

Those things have always been true.

Kids are having just as much sex now as they were 15 years ago.

Anyone who believes that they’re having LESS sex enough to explain the pregnancy/abortion rate hasn’t been paying attention.

Particularly in the demographic that considers teen pregnancy and birth to be a career move that guarantees food, housing and medical care if not a stipend indefinitely. That demographic’s birth rate is down as well. I’m not easily convinced it’s due to their having decided to attend the local JUCO and get associates degrees in bookkeeping.

It’s because half the country is gay or lesbian. Trust me on this. The media wouldn’t lie about these “facts”. Sarc.

I get skeptical of any article that focuses on 'teen birthrates'. It's easy to have a drop in teen birthrates while having an increase in teen pregnancy rates.

Actually even when you consider Teen Pregnancy, the good news is ABORTION RATES ARE DOWN AS WELL.
