Flight diverted, police called following airline seat reclining fracas
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | August 26, 2014 | Scott Mayerowitz

NEW YORK — Airline passengers have come to expect a tiny escape from the confined space of today's packed planes: the ability to recline their seat a few inches. When one passenger was denied that bit of personal space Sunday, it led to a heated argument and the unscheduled landing of their plane, just halfway to its destination.

The fight started on a United Airlines flight because one passenger was using the Knee Defender, a $21.95 gadget that attaches to a passenger's tray table and prevents the person in front of them from reclining. [...]

My pastor - very big guy - was flying and the man in front kept trying to put his seat back, hitting the pastor’s knees. After repeated hits, the pastor leaned forward and said, “why don’t you come back here and sit in my lap? It’ll be easier.”

Try sitting in front of a 4 year old who kicks the seat from Atlanta to Paris for 8 hours......................

A reasonable compromise would be to allow the seats to recline by no more than about 15 degrees. I've been behind jackwagons who recline their seats the entire way on a long haul flight and it ain't pleasant.

Some people need to sleep, some need to work. If you can't work out a reasonable compromise, then purchase a higher priced seat.

Yes very painful, however…………..

Our flight from Mulhouse to Paris was late so we missed the connection to LA.

They put us on a flight 5 hours later.

I soon realized that the only seat left was the one directly in front of me. Mine and that one both aisles near the back.

A guy weighing about 400 pounds (pr more) came in at the last minute and sat in front of me. The seat went back immediately as he sat. I asked for another seat, a flight seat or even sit in the bathroom and go in an out. Nothing.

We were like bob sledders all the way. I could have given the guy a hair cut and a shave.

Had to hold my food out to the side.

Looking back, I would have taken another later flight.

reclining seats make it impossible to use a real laptop to do work.

If this were cattle it would be illegal.

With a cup of water. Threw it at him when he refused to remove the device. Both kicked off the plane.

I meant the reaction of the original article, not the pastor story. Sorry.

I remember the no recline devices. Did not know airlines made them illegal.

not too bad but wouldn’t take him to the dance. I couldn’t sleep read or anything. No space in front of me.

I’m 6’3” and find many planes to be short on knee room. Nonetheless, I like to be able to recline my seat when flying, and accept that the person in front of me does, too. It’s not their fault that the seats are too close together to give me decent knee room. I deal with the best I can.

I did. And my wife was further up front, but I wouldn’t do that to her.

“A flight attendant asked him to remove the device and he refused.”

Game, set, MATCH.
The lady would have done well to let this play out.

1. Those seats are designed to RECLINE.
2. The “Knee Defender” is not part of the aircraft.
3. The deviced mentioned in #2 (above) interferes with a designed feature of the aircraft.
4. Instructions/requests/DEMANDS from aircrew are to be followed, per FAA regs and federal law.

I feel sorry for people who are large/tall or need to work, but an arrangement should be discussed before you decide that the seat in front of you (which the person occupying it has purchased) should not function as designed.
