The yin and yang of climate change

Global warming isn’t happening. The climate really isn’t changing that much. This inconvenient fact was marginalized by describing it as a “pause” or “temporary lull” in global warming – which might have been a defensible position in the early days of the “pause,” but is a very tough sell when that “temporary lull” has been running for eighteen years.

None of the vaunted climate change models predicted the “pause,” but we’re still supposed to have absolute faith in the models and their masters.

As someone with 3 engineering degrees, including a MS in computer science, over 30 years experience working with computers, including a couple of decades in modeling and simulation, I can tell you have I zero faith in the climate models.

Well, I'm sure the climate models are very useful as a feedback mechanism in the classic scientific method. I have a lot of faith in their usefulness there. But entities outside climate science have latched onto climate science and the models as a means of furthering their political, power, and control agenda. They are attempting to (mis)use these models in a predictive role, looking decades, even centuries into the future. These models cannot be used for that, and likely never will be scientifically defensible in that role. Ever. If I ever decide to go for my doctorate, I'll write my thesis on why climate models will never be able to predict the climate in 2100.

Though it would seem that the global warming that was predicted by the brotherhood of the hockey stick is not happening, there is still danger in denying that the profligate use of the earth’s resources will have some adverse effect somewhere down the line. So maybe we should plan for a sensible future, but only without all the drama and self flagellation. I don’t believe that it is necessary drive bicycles and eat dirt.

We have maybe been given a reprieve to get it right.

Bastardi is right that there is a mechanism for maintaining a climate equilibrium or otherwise we would have been plunged into an ice age by a series of volcanic eruptions in 1815 culminating with a cataclysmic eruption of the Tambora volcano in Indonesia. The following year, 1816, was dubbed the year without a summer as volcanic ash spewed high into the stratosphere reflected sunlight. After the ash settled our climate returned to normal.

This effect has been seen more recently when the Pinatubo volcano erupted in 1991. The normal amount of sunlight reaching the Earth's surface was reduced by roughly 10% leading to a decrease in global temperatures of about 0.7 F. Even the feared hole in the ozone layer reached record levels. Yet there was no climate tipping point and things have settled back to normal patterns.

The global warming dogma that molecular level increases of CO2 in the atmosphere caused by human industrial activity will warm the climate to a tipping point resulting in a catastrophic heating are total bunk. While CO2 levels have increased from a variety of sources there has been no global warming, but measurable global cooling for almost two decades.

Was reading a great article by a climatologist who took the whole AGW crowd to task for being wed to the models. His contention was that they are more in love with what the models say should be than with what the data actually shows. Hence facts are totally irrelevant to them.
