EU ban on powerful vacuum cleaners prompts anger and legal challenge
Manchester Guardian ^ | Thursday 21 August 2014 14.58 EDT | Rebecca Smith, consumer affairs correspondent

Consumers are being urged to buy powerful vacuum cleaners while they can after it emerged that some of the most powerful models on the market will disappear in September when a new EU rule comes into force.

An EU energy label, to be introduced from 1 September, means manufacturers will not be able to make or import vacuum cleaners with a motor that exceeds 1,600 watts.

The Which? consumer group said many of its Best Buy models had motor sizes that exceeded this, “so if you’re in the market for a powerful vacuum, you should act quickly, before all of the models currently available sell out”. The wattage will be limited to only 900 watts by 2017—further restricting choice. Current cleaners typically boast an average of 1,800 watts. …

Just to show that NOTHING can suck more than the Government.

Soon Europeans will be saying "this doesn't suck enough!"

Which seems to be a theme for them.

Another example of how cheap other people’s time is to unelected bureaucrats.

It’s obvious, they should just rate all vacuum cleaners by efficiency.

Publish a “suck per watt” number for each model and then increase that number year by year just like the auto CAFE standards....:^)

Motor size is not necessarily an indication of cleaning efficiency.

What? No more 15 BIG amps advertising?

This use of watts or amps is meaningless. I could build a 100 kilowatt vacuum that would lift a dust mote.

They are way ahead of you. From the article: "The wattage will be limited to only 900 watts by 2017 –..."

The last paragraph stated that the government was there to help, and since you were too dumb to research crappy vacuum cleaners on your own and ended up buying one, the heretofore unregulated industry will now be regulated[ so everybody will have to buy an even crappier by design model].

I find it interesting how governments justify rules like this by claiming it reduces energy consumption and is, therefore, more ecologically sound. But I have to wonder how much more green it is to build an electrical appliance with an underpowered motor that will most assuredly burn out before a larger motor and, therefore, require replacement multiple times. Our landfills are filled to the brim with underpowered appliances that burned out and required replacement. Meanwhile, the overpowered 35 year old washing machine in my basement is presently doing a load of laundry and the 55 year old coke machine in my kitchen is still capable of freezing a bottle of beer. They don’t make ‘em like they used to and it has NOTHING to do with energy consumption. It’s just one more lie told to consumers.

Well, this is motor power rather than size. In physics terms, power is work performed over time. For example, a 3-horsepower Shop-Vac would have that power rating expressed as 2,237 watts.

This will turn out like low-flow toilets. Europeans will have wimpy vacuum cleaners that they will run longer using three times as much electricity to do the same job as a more powerful machine would.
