The images of police in riot gear armed with heavy weaponry and tanks has at times become the alarming backdrop for the Ferguson story, with pictures that television can’t resist.

If my town comes under fire from new black panthers, I’ll be returning fire and I suspect my neighbors will be standing right beside me doing the same. And that’s the way it should be.

I think the most irritating thing about this whole “militarized” police thing is the way people go full stupid. Rather than taking the issue up with the people who approve it in state county and local governments they throw meaningless tantrums at police themselves.

Most police departments don’t need much in the way of armored vehicles or other riot control gear but many cities do need it as we see in Ferguson where people are actively shooting at police.

“Given these developments, it is almost impossible for many Americans not to feel like their government is targeting them.” It sounds like something a liberal lawmaker might write.

Not since Richard Nixon, Howie. The government has been a leftist cudgel used to bash Americans who don't tow the federal line for at least that long.

Ya, saw some really old masks they probably got from surplus store.

Even saw an old M-17 pro mask that of they type I was issued in the Army over 20 years ago...

If your town comes under fire from the New Black Panthers, call Rand Paul to rescue you.

I have a better idea. Why don't you pick up your own rifle and defend yourself. Seems to have worked pretty well for those merchants who had the guts (and guns) to do it.

I heard Mark Levin say the other day “no liberals are complaining about the militarization of federal agencies, NOAA, DOE, etc)

Who wants to tell the police they can’t have the equipment they think they need to protect themselves? Would we do that to the military or to fire fighters? Not me.

The Library if Congress and the Dept of Education also have their own SWAT teams.

The money and the equipment isn't coming from local governments. Police can partly fund themselves now through civil asset forfeiture. And the fedgov is passing out equipment to local law enforcement without the consent of local government.

“...Why Ferguson has conservatives challenging military-style police”

Obviously, none of these conservatives own and operate a convenience store on Main Street, Ferguson, MO.

"There are no tanks there..."

I suspect that's more a matter of economics than restraint. If the fedgov had included Abrams MBTs in their LE giveaway, rest assured there would be departments that would have felt the need to secure one.

“......if the President was let’s just say, WAS a REPUBLICAN, would this still be a BIG DEAL because of the issue of the need to fight crime?”.....

If we had a “real president” no matter what side of the aisle he/she represented, the problem in Ferguson would not have escalated to this magnitude. Ferguson is only the “testing ground” for the demodummies to see how the “citizens” might react when they (demodummies) decide to take over the entire nation.

What has happened in Ferguson is a direct result of what the hoards of “Street Rats” have been allowed to get away with for so long. Big Mike Brown caused his own demise. Does anyone with a logical mind think that cops go around seeking someone, especially blacks, to arbitrarily shoot? I think NOT.

Barry Michigan took effective action.

Small Michigan Community Rebels Against Police Chief Over Civilian Reserve Officers, Armored Vehicles

The township has since dumped the reserve officers and the police chief resigned in anger in the middle of the meeting. He didn't like the fact that people took his army and toys away.

Barry Township police chief Victor Pierce resigns

Seems pretty effective to me.

Even a broken clock is right once a day, he stumbles at the end but other than that he pretty much gets it, and that’s amazing considering he’s such an ass.

I disagree, most police departments that are getting the MRAPs and even the Hummers are finding they can’t afford to maintain them.

A tank they couldn’t even afford to fill the gas tank.

In contrast to the Ferguson PD, MO State Police and National Guard?

None has been too effective.

There was nothing military at all about the Brown incident. He was a regular police officer in a regular squad car using a regular weapon and making a regular stop.

As fir riot police having heavy equipment - this ain’t your granpa’s riot. These are coordinated, frequently involving the hiding if weapons parts in advance (to be assembled by the rioters), and always involving lower tech devices such Molotov cocktails and slingshots with ball bearings (which can kill you very nicely).

This militarization meme is all a Dem ploy to remove police presence from dangerous places so that their boys can run them. Don’t snitch, remember? Just do what your Dem thug overlords tell you.

Right on!

This ain’t Mayberry, cops have to deal with more bold criminals who have more firepower at their disposal than ever before.

Is it abused at times, yes. But I find it amazing on this forum, where the mantra is “Guns Don’t Kill, People Do”, people are focused on the kind of equipment that police have.
