The real looting of Ferguson: its black citizens never had a chance to get by
The Manchester Guardian ^ | August 19, 2014 | Steven W. Thrasher

The National Guard rolled in to protect a status quo. But racism set a status quo of inequality long before Michael Brown died.

The National Guard will essentially protect the legal looting of black people – much as it was protected when Missouri became the last slave state admitted to the union.

The symptoms of structural racism stain America everywhere, but its execution is particularly perverse in places like Ferguson. It’s not just that black drivers are stopped more often for alleged crimes than white drivers, despite the Missouri attorney general’s report that white people break the law more often. It’s not that Ferguson’s police force is 94% white in a town that’s two-thirds black. It’s not even, as Jeff Smith wrote in Monday’s New York Times, that black people–many unemployed– “do more to fund local government than relatively affluent whites” by way of those stops and the subsequent fines.

The real perversion of justice by way of modern American racism is that black people in Ferguson – like black people in the greater St Louis metropolitan area and nationally–are marginalized economically and physically from day one. That is the real looting of Ferguson.

We are consistently twice as likely to be unemployed – and in and near St Louis, “47 percent of the metro area’s African-American men between ages 16 and 24 are unemployed”. Our men are more likely to be convicted and our women are more likely to be evicted. We are more likely to be victims of predatory loans. Our children are twice as likely to have asthma (even before you teargas them). Our babies are twice as likely to die before the age of one–and their mothers are three or four times more likely to die as a result of bearing them....

I’d like to say cry me a river but I know what they are talking about with the traffic stops although I don’t think it is because they are black. The police need revenue and young people are easy targets.

Around here they target young people or maybe just older vehicles, the fines are outrageous and the poorer kids can’t pay them so they think if they ignore them they will go away. In the cities they impound their cars and they can’t afford to get them back and soon they lose their licenses. The seat belt tickets alone are over $100 bucks!

The seatbelt thing really boils my blood, they ignore speeders but are obsessive about seat belts because it is easy money. Another thing, and I know they just use it as probable cause to stop people is the license plate light, some thing I didn’t even know existed until a kid I knew got a ticket for it about 20 years ago, they give them out when they have absolutely nothing else to cite them for.

All the while real crime is ignored while the police protect us from those seat belt scofflaws.

I remember watching it on live TV and it was many years ago. I’ve looked and I can’t find it anywhere.

I live just fine in “Racial Harmony” with people of all races, my black friends who served with me are probably not going to move to your new black-only “territory”; but they’ll still defend your right to espouse such nonsense

In general black african-americans have a different culture... and unfortunitly it’s not a culture that leads anywhere good.

If they had a good culture that taught responsibility we wouldn’t have this “crisis” today...

Blacks must be the most pathetic people on earth.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

No. They aren’t. People can say that Americans are the most pathetic people on earth because “we” elected him, twice. But I never elected him. I doubt any freepers elected him either. The squeaky wheel gets the attention and when it starts riots it gets attention 24/7. But all the decent black people out there don’t deserve to be dismissed in a blanket statement.

This sensitivity to racism is way over the top, and beyond ridiculous.

“But all the decent black people out there don’t deserve to be dismissed in a blanket statement.”

So very true. I often think if I were black, with a great family, career and living the dream, how furious I would be with my race. I would also be embarrassed with the performance of our first black president. He had a duty, and a responsibility to advance his race, by making sure everything he did would reflect positively. Instead, he became the typical black stereotype.

He really let black people down. A real leader would have conducted himself with an eye toward making people proud. But it was never about serving people for him - it was always him him him him. So instead of acting presidential, he embarrasses himself on the international stage, says things like “wee wee’d up” and makes a point of behaving unpresidential. Can’t really tell their children they hope they grow up to be just like the president, can they? But...but...he got a Nobel Prize!

Cry me a river. As pointed out before a free society where people realize their potential can only exist if the people are intelligent. Most African folks cannot function in a free society because they lack the intelligence to do so.

I wonder what it would be like to live in the Central African Republic?

Pull the police and national Guard out, establish a perimeter around Ferguson, and let them run their city the way they see fit. Hopefully, there will be lots of video feeds and popcorn.”

Exactly right. Let them get their own police and shopkeepers so they are not bothered by the white man.

What are people like the author going to do when people aren’t forced to listen to them any more?
