If one wants respect, then one must be respectful and then earn respect.
If one wants to 'get ahead in this world and not be held back', then one gets up in the morning, gets a job (regardless what it is or what it pays).
One also is on the job, rain or shine, every day, no matter how one feels.
Know this, employers don't care what one's color is as long as one does the job and earns their pay.
That is how one gets ahead and is not held back.
All of these blacks who say they are being held back wouldn't be held back if they did the above.

Vietnamese that could not even speak a word of English have come to the USA and made a good life for themselves. Plenty of Asians come here and do very well. We have so many from India that come here and do well. So many Latinos come here and work hard and do well too.
For some reason, blacks, overall, haven’t succeeded. Maybe Lew can give us the excuses?

Poor Asians arrive in America and thrive.
Jamaicans will BRAG about how many jobs they have in order to pay off their homes early.
Even Poor Mexicans arrive into this country and within a generation, are business owners in mostly white neighborhoods.
Perhaps Blacks are not successful due to DNA/intelligence rather that perceived white racism or class warfare.
