Ukraine forces destroy most of a column of Russian military vehicles, president says

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Friday that Ukrainian forces had attacked and destroyed part of a column of Russian military vehicles on Ukrainian territory, a step that, if confirmed, would represent a significant escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.

Poroshenko told British Prime Minister David Cameron that “the majority” of a column of Russian military vehicles “had been destroyed by the Ukrainian artillery at night,” his office said in a statement. The announcement came as NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Friday that the defense alliance had seen an “incursion” into Ukraine the previous night.

I guess there were some outside witnesses to Putin's forces getting smacked. I'm sure this will hurt the feelings of Putin's fans, and will complicate his ability to climb down from his bullying of his neighbors.

LOL! It’s more complicated than Putin. There are only a huge population of Ukrainians that want Russia instead of Ukraine / EU.

From your own article:

The Kremlin denied Friday that there had been a border incursion, and a Russian defense ministry spokesman said that no Russian vehicles had been destroyed because none had been inside Ukraine. Poroshenko offered no proof to support his claim.

Somebody's lying.

Yeah, and I know you’re going to believe the former KGB Colonel Putin.

Oh really? How come there are few of them fighting then with the Putin agents sent to take the area from the Ukrainians? Putin’s pulling this stuff all over the former Soviet Empire so he can rebuild a new one. Don’t kid yourself by falling for the Sudetenland German argument.

I found it odd that two journalists that witnessed Russian armor entering Ukraine were described as respected. Another oddity is that the humanitarian aid vehicles are mostly empty.

I think Putin has misjudged Ukraine’s resolve and the support of ethnic Russians within Ukraine that his mercenaries thought they could count on.

It’s a lot more complicated than that, and that’s my point.

You think Putin instigated all of this? Not Kiev? European Union? Give me a break.

You think all the other nations surrounding Russia are also instigating problems with Putin? Come on. Who said the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest disaster of the 20th Century? Putin. He wants to rebuild that empire. Look how he threatens Moldavia. Look at the Republic of Georgia. How come so many FSB men in Ukraine are resigning. Putin is the problem.

You are right. It is more complicated.

Maybe only solution is to divide it in half.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Friday that Ukrainian forces had attacked and destroyed part of a column of Russian military vehicles on Ukrainian territory, a step that, if confirmed, would represent a significant escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.

There are people who would interpret a column of military vehicles entering a sovereign country's territory against the will of the legitimate government to be an act of war. There are people who would interpret destroying that column of vehicles as an act of war. There are people who would conclude that when hostile countries engage in successive acts of war against each other, a de facto state of war exists between the two. Or they could just understate the situation and describe it as a significant escalation.

Guess who was involved in this right from the start. John McCain tells Ukraine protesters: 'We are here to support your just cause' December 2013. Just like Libya and Syria. He must have had Obama's blessing. Again.

Right again it’s not that simple...

Any effort to break eastern Ukraine from Ukraine proper would meet resistance not only from the western half of the country, but from wide swaths of Ukrainians living within those regions (This is a good time to note that past polls have indicated that a majority of Russian-speakers living in the country have also expressed loyalty to Ukraine and not Russia. Also, some people who identify themselves as Ukrainian-speaking may speak Russian in their day-to-day lives).

“There are significant numbers of ethnic Ukrainians who continue to speak Ukrainian in the east and in the south,” says Ukraine scholar Alexander Motyl in a recent interview with RFE/RL. “There are significant numbers of passionate Ukrainians, let’s call them patriots, who speak Russian and who prefer Russian culture, and who nevertheless are committed to Ukrainian statehood and Ukrainian nationhood.”

And no matter what ITS NONE OF RUSSIAS BUSINESS.

Quote of the Morning: 8/16/14

Former President of Georgia,Mikheil Saakashvili, when asked about Vladimir Putin, said, “He likes to be feared. For example: the last time I met with him, he said, ‘Your western friends promise you nice things, but seldom deliver. I promise you bad things, and I deliver.’”

Reports are that they were nailed by OTR-21 Tochka (SS-21 Scarab) systems:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OTR-21_Tochka

They shoot surface to surface many dozens of miles away with a half ton warhead with a CEP of a couple hundred feet. A very good system for taking out an armored column outside of a populated area... if you know exactly where it is going to be. But given that Ukraine’s intel capability is limited (not to be downplayed, but still limited), I wonder if we’re seeing the results of real-time data sharing with major western powers?

Not really. If Putin thought he could win elections in Ukraine he wouldn’t be committing mass murder there right now.

I read in a Christian Science Monitor article that a woman from Sloviansk said exactly 1 person out of the 2000 people in her neighborhood became a “rebel” fighter.
