A Cop Is Killed Every 58 Hours
National Review ^ | 08/15/2014 | Michelle Malkin

If you’ve been watching cable news, reading Hollywood celebrities’ tweets, and listening to race-hustling opportunists, you might think that every police officer in America has a finger on the trigger, hunting for any excuse to gun down defenseless youths.

This hysterical nonsense must be stopped.

The Cirque du Cop-Bashing, with Al Sharpton as ringmaster, is working overtime to exploit the deadly incident in Ferguson, Mo. That means stoking anti–law enforcement fires at all costs.

Are there bad cops? Yes. Does the police state go overboard sometimes? Yes. Do the demagogues decrying systemic racism and braying about “assassinations” know what happened when teenager Mike Brown was tragically shot and killed last week? No.

Here’s a reality check. While narcissistic liberal journalists and college kids are all posting “hands up” selfies in hipster solidarity with Ferguson protesters, it’s law-enforcement officers who risk their lives in “war zones” every day across the country.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) reports that a total of 1,501 law-enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past ten years, an average of one death every 58 hours, or 150 per year. These include local and state police officers, federal officers, correctional officers, and military law-enforcement officers.

Fact: Last year, 100 law-enforcement officers were killed. On average, over the past decade, there have been 58,261 assaults against law enforcement each year, resulting in 15,658 injuries.

Fact: New York City has lost more officers in the line of duty than any other department, with 697 deaths. Texas has lost 1,675 officers, more than any other state.

Just this week, NLEOMF released preliminary fatality statistics from August 2013 to August 2014. Total fatalities are up 14 percent, from 63 last year to 72 this year.

Cops have one of the safest jobs around ... I have a farm and am a pilot , I've also driven trucks ,, I'm on the most dangerous list three times over ... most police deaths are in car accidents .. CRY ME A RIVER ,, they have the guns and have the option of confronting a bad guy or taking an extra minute to arrive so there will be no confrontation .. in most cases they show up HOURS later... crybaby union thugs.

Kinda’ like the 3 motorcycle cops and three POlice SUVs that turned on their blue lights and cut across 2 lanes of traffic to turn into Logan’s for lunch.

I was trying to turn in and the first cycle with blue lights cut me off - followed by the rest of them.

Special rules for Special People.

The police need to work on the image they present to the public.

Please explain how having TWO cars speeding down an icy or rain-slicked road at night, instead of just one, is safer for the public.
Because if the speeder or drunk isn’t apprehended he might kill you, your kid or your wife. The officer undergoes comprehensive training to operate a vehicle under all types of circumstances.

Interesting ... and my LE friends do not belong to a union. Most LE would say who you gonna call when you need help?

Ever try chasing down a drunk or a speeder on a busy highway, at night,
*****************************
I work in a hospital ,, I have a kid in a coma for the last 3 years I see every day... he was hit by a cop speeding at over 100mph who was rushing home in the middle of his shift for a quickie... You are correct , cops are dangerous to be around.

As to your point about car control... I have over 10 years SCCA solo2 experience... and have driven the police qualification course in Lake City FL against Florida State Troopers (it was a solo event and about 10 of the FHP’s best drivers attended in Mustangs , this was in the early 90’s) ALL of the FHP officers .. ALL OF THEM were dead last that day ,, their car control skills stunk and they were the best they had .. they wanted to show us up on their home turf...

The headline is not simply wrong.

One death every 58 hours comes out to 150 per year, which is very close to the average for the last 10 years.

58 hours is about 2 and a half days. And the claim was that an officer dies every 58 hours, not that a cop is murdered every 58 hours.

On average, it appears to be correct.

Unless the police are lying about how many officers die each year.

I don’t mind if cops wear body armor.
I do want to limit them to the same weapons (and magazine sizes) that civilians are limited to.
And I want every last one to wear a go-cam and have a camera looking out the front of their vehicle.

Being a policeman is a relatively safe job. How often is a construction worker killed, how many per year? Truck drivers? Soldiers?

Law enforcement doesn’t even make it onto the top 10 list of the deadliest jobs in America. Mundane and common jobs like roofer, construction, electrical, and truck and taxi driver all beat out cops as deadly occupations. And none of them get to retire after 25 years.

What happened to the cop, of your mention? I hope the cop was fired because that was not a normal cop. There is good and bad everywhere and in every profession. Too bad that life is life and prayers will be said for your Son. My promise and my empathy.

Cops don’t even make the top ten:

The 10 Deadliest Jobs:

1. Logging workers
2. Fishers and related fishing workers
3. Aircraft pilot and flight engineers
4. Roofers
5. Structural iron and steel workers
6. Refuse and recyclable material collectors
7. Electrical power-line installers and repairers
8. Drivers/sales workers and truck drivers
9. Farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers
10. Construction laborers

Here on the other side of the fence you are the enemy 90%+ of the time ... I had a cop hanging out at a firestation hold the emergency signal red for over 10 full minutes on me with his MIRT device ,,, when I finally honked my horn and pulled through the “stuck” red light (no traffic in any direction) he pulled me over ... bastard was manufacturing tickets... happens all the time to us that aren’t in the blue gang.

As for “who you gonna call” ,, I have called on a few occasions after break-ins ,, response time is usually measured in hours.. I dial .357.

Many are clamoring for law enforcement officers to work without wearing soft body armor...

Who is clamoring for law enforcement officers to work without wearing soft body armor?

I like video. May have mentioned that before that I like video. Have to be ready though for anything out there and if outgunned must come out with equal force if full autos are involved. So I also support full auto for LE when the situation calls for full auto.

From now on, I want to see white protestors out every time a person (cop or otherwise) is mudered by “one of obamas sons”). I want it plainly visible WHY there are more “people of color” behind bars. Knockout “games” that are killing and maiming whites? I want the same demonstrations against the feral behavior of those who think harming others is fun.
