The ‘amnesty’ card: GOP launches 2014 border war

So much for that fresh start with Latino voters.

In a dramatic departure from their determination only months ago to win a second look from that rapidly-growing community, national Republicans have embarked on a sustained campaign to make the immigration crisis a central issue in 2014 and exhort voters to punish the White House for failing to lock down the U.S.-Mexico border.

The intensity of their rhetoric has increased as a surge of child migrants has renewed attention to the border and amid anticipation that President Barack Obama will issue a set of executive actions on immigration, including potentially suspending deportations for countless migrants.

Gone are the days of tiptoeing around the real and perceived sensitivities of the Latino community, which holds powerful sway over the Electoral College in presidential elections.

Public and private polling shows border control creeping up the list of concerns among conservative voters and independents, and the GOP is responding accordingly. Republican candidates are lacing into the Obama administration and its congressional allies for supporting “amnesty” and casting them as unable to secure the southern border.

Three major Republican Senate hopefuls – Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Scott Brown of New Hampshire and Terri Lynn Land of Michigan – are airing commercials blasting their Democratic opponents for supporting “amnesty” and attacking “lawlessness” and “chaos” on the border. Other candidates are expected to join them.

Thank God we were able to hold the line against the House leadership's insidious plans to pass Amnesty. Because the political winds have now changed.

This manufactured "crisis" rests squarely around the necks of the democrats and on the moderate republicans who wanted to (and did) go along with them.

We never fell for the "court the latinos" rhetoric, because we don't believe in pandering to groups. We utterly reject collectivism and embrace republican government.

the Latino community, which holds powerful sway over the Electoral College in presidential elections.

In Politico's dreams.

No evidence whatsoever that this is true.

What really, really bothers me is that the Republicans keep trying to pander to the “minority” voters.

The truth is, Republicans do not need the hispanic or the black to win elections!

They need to energize the 100,000,000 million or so US citizens who, though otherwise eligible to vote in 2012, did not vote.

Hey! Republicans!

Here is your sign:

PANDER TO REAL AMERICANS!

No evidence whatsoever that this is true.

The problem is, though, that the RINO establishment believes it.

Politico realizes this is an issue that could badly damage the Dems - who are already on life support. Hence this is nothing but an effort to guiltify Repubs, hoping they don’t all do it.

Scott Brown here in NH is running only immigration/border type ads. He seems to think this is the big issue. We shall see.

I married into a large Hispanic family, conservative on social values, but always voted Democrat. When we would have conversations on current issues, I never strayed from my conservatism, and I was respectful in the way I disagreed with them. It took about 10 years, but they all eventually became registered Republicans.

The moral of the story is stand by your principles unapologetically. The average person is a follower that wants to be led in the right direction.

This yob seems offended that people are demanding that the constitution be followed and that our borders be secured.... perhaps he should just move to Mexico if he loves the third world that much

Here's a theory I present once in awhile on FR: What if the new Hispanic voters are NOT lockstep Dems? I mean, maybe they won't be obedient to either party.

Stick with me. As someone who has seen what happens in a community that is roughly 30% of each "race"--the Hispanics often pick fights with the blacks, and vice versa.

I happen to believe that Hispanics will start their own third party. Maybe the end of the two party system is a by-product of open borders.

Within Hispanics, I have observed that the El Salvadorans don't seem to like anyone else but El Salvadorans. In a mixed Hispanic community, the Mexican gangs sometimes war with the El Salvadorans. The black gangs are just out of luck.

I don't think the GOP will get to call the shots with Hispanics, but then, I'm thinking that the DNC will not find dominating their new pets easy, either.

And I'm going to laugh and laugh at white liberal elitists. Look at what is happening in Chicago with the mayor's race. The thugs don't need a white liberal anymore to tell them what to do and to distribute all the crooked booty...

Great, so we’ll be even further Balkanized, what could possibly go wrong?

I'm not saying it's a desirable outcome. I'm just looking at the cultures of Central America and trying to picture them taking marching orders from Nancy Pelosi and Reid and Rahm Immanuel and Hillary.

I'm not picturing it. The Democrats have been able to brainwash blacks since the fifties, back when life was a lot tougher for law-abiding black families who went to church and loved each other. The Dems destroyed the families, their faith, their futures through propaganda and hate mongering. And they have a terrible control over the minds of most black people who could live decent, good lives if they'd never listened to Democrats. Maybe "balkanization" could actually help conservatives. We could beat out a divided DNC, and forget for good about the GOP.

Balkanization is NEVER God. Especially with the GOP having to do endless pandering to these groups just to get elected.

Those idiots. Most hispanics want illegal immigration stopped. This is a no brainer except for people without a brain, i.e. Democrats.

Instead of conservatives becoming the third party, how about becoming the fourth party?

Anyway, just a theory. I don't think all this border-destroying is going to work out the way they hope.

I hadn't considered the third party possibility. Its possible I guess - there are some rumblings in the black community against the democrat party lately, we'll see if that amounts to anything.

But first hispanics will have to decide to get more politically involved than they currently are. So far the majority of voting ones seem content to believe what the left tells them & vote accordingly.

I've often had similar thoughts. If Hispanics reach 1/4 to 1/3 of the US population, I doubt they'll just be here to do as the old leftist Democrats of the US wish them to do. Not sure what direction they might go in, or if it'll be a good thing, but I do expect them to become much more independent if their numbers reach certain levels.

Imagine dozens of Luis Gutierrezes Cecilia Munozes.
