For most people, summer is a treasured time to cool your heels in a cottage by a lake or in a hammock in the backyard. Its not so simple for politicians. For them, deciding when and where to vacation can be perilous. Repair to a beach on the East Coast and youre an out-of-touch elitist; stay away too long and you'll be asked whos minding the store.
Take President Barack Obama. How dare he go away while hes dropping bombs in Iraq, even though he can order them to be dropped from wherever he happens to be? Hes taking the political hit of returning to Marthas Vineyard.
Republicans are at home in a 10-gallon hat and boots. The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man, Ronald Reagan explained as he blithely broke the then-record for days spent away from the White House at his California ranch (349 days). Reagan kept his title until another cowboy, George W. Bush, came along and spent 490 days at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.
How someone spends their time when freed from shirt, tie, pantsuit and handlers could give us a rare glimpse of who they really are. But not this year, and not these people.
They are so warped by their career choice they can no longer mimic how regular people behave, even when they are supposed to be at rest.

A Rump Ranger, not a cowboy.
President Girlie Pants is no cowboy.
Interesting Obama never vacays in Chicago where I guess he still has a home.
The difference between Obama vacays and the Repub presidents vacays is the Republicans vacayed in homes they owned and did more than golf for hours and hours.
Hey, they be doin' too much shootin' up there!
There’s no shakedown money there.
Not us poor folks.
Margaret misses the point, of course. The problem isn’t the location of the vacation. It’s not even that the president gets to go on vacations. The problem is that going on vacation, playing golf, and doing fund raisers are the only things he seems to do. He doesn’t make good decisions regardless of your political values. He doesn’t seem pay attention or know what’s going on in the world. He doesn’t know what’s going on in different agencies of the executive branch. He is by his own admission clueless.
Basically, by what you describe....an “empty suit”?
The fact that he wasn’t going to get tenure as a professor while he did that gig there in Chicago....says something. I would suspect at best...he was a grad student pretending to be a professor, and he’s repeating the whole episode again...a grad student pretending to be president.
He’s admitted he’s lazy and blamed that on Hawaii. Perhaps he has attention deficit disorder or some other new age brain problem.
Margaret reminds me of a chipmunk.
Who misses the point, which is that the SOB doesn’t deserve a vacation. Many Americans have had to cancel their vacations because of his polices.
Outstanding piece that really cuts to the chase.
Another difference is that Bush and Reagan went to THEIR OWN HOMES!!!!! HELLO....they didn’t pay $100,000.00 in RENT just for ONE VACATION! They went to their RANCHES and did WORK that ranches require while also having WORLD LEADERS come to them!!!
Exactly right. And, IIRC, President Bush had facilities on the ranch to house the SS agents and guests (saving taxpayers $$$s) and also built a meeting room/press briefing area. For all intents and purposes it was like a mini-WH.
Yeah, years of smoking pot will do that to you.
In times of crisis, especially foreign crisis’ which can put our military in harm’s way, I’d like to see our President’s full attention on the crisis instead of which club to play on a bad lie. Bouncing ideas off your staff, National Security team, CIA and the Pentagon is part of the job, not soliciting the advice of your caddy.
Who knows— staying in the office might lead to a serious constructive thought and result in a beneficial action or policy?
