Google's Satellites Could Soon See Your Face from Space
motherboard.vice.com ^ | Aug 11, 2014

Two months ago, after much lobbying by the biggest satellite company in North America, DigitalGlobe, the US government relaxed restrictions to allow for commercially available satellite imagery up to 25 cm resolution—twice as detailed as the previous limit of 50 cm.

Now, the first commercial satellite set to capture these high-res images, DigitalGlobe's Worldview-3, will launch this Wednesday.

The extra sharp images from Worldview-3 will greatly increase the maps' level of detail to the point where it can make out 10-inch objects, which means Google will soon be able to see “manholes and mailboxes” from its hired eyes in the sky.

The satellite behemoth is now making a push to relax the rules even further, down to 10 cm resolution, about the height of an iPhone 4.

Well this means you won’t be able to hide anything from your friendly county property assessor.

Used to be if it wasn’t visible from the road there was an excellent chance you could put a small out building on your property without a building permit or it showing up on your property tax assessment.

Now the tax assessment folks will be able to look at your property from space and compare the satellite picture of your property with your tax assessment description and wham bam thank you sir you a down for all of those improvements to your property.

They have been able to do that for years with existing tech. Not hard to make out a building.

I’ve figured the angle of the satellite in relation to my house and was thinking about position a mirror to reflect in its direction. I noticed in the google image of my house a sheet of white plastic in my yard took out some area of my yard from view. I’m wondering if more direct glare from a mirror would increase the effect.

Of course I’d likely hear from the FAA.

It would warm my heart to see Google tank. What next? Google Voice? Wanna hear inside your neighbors home? Introducing Google Audio Snoop. Nobody snitches better. Seriously they seem to have serious personal privacy ethics issues. I have an idea. What about Google Cams in the CEO’s home in every room?

They have been doing that for years! I have seen lots of county sites that have a satellite photo of the home linked to the property record.

Two years ago, Harris County TX went through the roles and made massive changes to assessments based on property locations using satellite imagery.

Only when you’re sunbathing. Satellites aren’t really at a good angle for face seeing. Now if they can identify you by your bald spot...
