Dictionary goes ideological, slams those who “homeschool”

UPDATE: Dictionary.com has removed the offensive “recommended sentences” which slammed homeschooling. Thanks to all who wrote in.

For those asking, here was a screenshot of the offensive words.

Romeike

Because of course a dictionary has to become ideological…

If you look up “homeschool” over at Dictionary.com, you get the following “example sentences” which use the word in question.

If you wish to teach your children such nonsense, then homeschool where lame propaganda can remain unchallenged.
If she can’t find anyone willing to validate her helicopter parenting, she’ll homeschool.
If you want to keep your kids from reality and turn them into mindless automaton copies of yourself, homeschool them.

My wife and I do not homeschool, but we know many parents who do. But, I’m not really offended by this. It reminds me of lame “home skool” t-shirt sold by J.C. Penney’s a few years ago. Both the shirt and this stupid dictionary entry are hackneyed attacks which say a whole lot more about the author than it does the subject of the sentence.

Maybe it’s as simply as someone at Dictionary.com who has an ax to grind. Did his child lose a spelling bee to a homeschooler?

From Dictionary.com at 8:32pm EDT, Aug 11, 2014:
Examples for homeschool

If you wish to teach your children such nonsense, then homeschool where lame propaganda can remain unchallenged.

If she can’t find anyone willing to validate her helicopter parenting, she’ll homeschool.

If you want to keep your kids from reality and turn them into mindless automaton copies of yourself, homeschool them.

The kits are also available through school and homeschool suppliers, and toy and gift catalogs.

So this year, along with our other homeschool subjects, we’ve been doing a unit on food.

Parents may homeschool their children for a number of reasons.

In order to homeschool, parents may need to dedicate a significant amount of time to schooling their children.

The last three are middle of the road and okay by me. The first three are batshit lib crazy.

Hyperbole is great exaggeration to make a point, Matthew 18:9 is an excellent example where Jesus says: “And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.”

The point being made isn't that you should go gouge out your eyes and cut off your limbs; rather it is that (a) you need to avoid sin as if it were a snare to your very soul, and (b) [delving a little deeper] that the heart is where the change needs to happen. Simply gouging out your eyes and lobbing off your limbs won't alter your heart, but God can and will, if you let him.

humor only works when there’s a bit of truth to it.

homeschooled kids score better on standardized tests like sat, and the parents are generally more concerned about, and involved in, their kids’ education than the average parents.

it isnt meant to be funny because the generalizations are the opposite. it is a deliberate slam, not meant to be funny. funny would be doing it regarding public school parents, not homeschooler parents, because then at least the generalizations would have some truth to them.

If you want students who can write papers like this at the ages of 11 & 12 and then go on to graduate from college like this, then homeschool. BTW, FReeper PowerBaby has since accepted an offer to enroll in an MS/PhD program at the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana. She is one of but seven students in that program.

It reminds me of lame “home skool” t-shirt sold by J.C. Penney’s a few years ago.

But you know that wasn't designed by a public school kid...They misspelled "hoam". (/s)
