McCain: Time to ease arms sales ban on Vietnam

U.S. Sen. John McCain said Friday in Vietnam that it’s time for the United States to ease the ban on selling lethal arms to the communist country, saying it has progressed on human rights.

McCain told reporters in Hanoi that the easing should happen gradually, but he hoped it could begin as early as next month.

“It should be limited at first to those defensive capabilities such as coast guard and maritime systems that are purely for external security,” he said.

It should be limited at first to those defensive capabilities

And then move on up to offensive? Great idea, Juan.

Another day, another foot shoved deep into his mouth.

Interesting. I’d always assumed McCain’s pravoslavniphobia (irrational fear or hatred of Orthodox Christians, esp. Slavic Orthodox Christians) was rooted in his hatred of Russians for his treatment at the hands of the Vietnamese Communists. He’s willing to sell arms to the Vietnamese Communists now, but still harbors antipathy toward Eastern Christians (the most egregious instance of this was his shameful behavior toward Orthodox and Syriac Christians testifying recently before a Senate committee against his desire to arm Syrian Sunnis, though it also runs through all of his attitudes toward the Balkans and Eastern Europe generally).

Vietnam is having problems with China putting oil rigs in their waters.

Once in a while he gets it right. I wish it were more often.

He was held captive by these people IN Hanoi.

Six years.

No cable, no gym, no outside contact.

Torture and death, isolation, food a dog couldn’t eat.

I think he remembers.

While its good to have people that can poke China in the eye, this seems rather stupid if it only empowers other communists.

Vietnam could be a good ally against the ChiComs. If we can get them in our corner, despite our past history, that would be a good thing IMHO.

Right now, their leadership is a bunch of old farts who just want to cling to power, but their days are numbered.

That’s OK. Vietnam’s leadership will eventually rotate away from counterrevolutionaries and back towards those who believe in world communism.

What does he remember, if he wants to empower them the same way he wants to empower Islamic terrorists in Syria?

Sounds like ole McCain has some buddies in the arms business.

With all the crises we now face, McCain thinks this is what needs fining? Just weird!
