A New Haven convenience store owner shot and killed a man suspected of trying to rob his store and another store owned by his brother at gunpoint on the same night, police said.

According to police, the owner of Congress Mini Market at 750 Congress Avenue called 911 to report that a man armed with a rifle had tried to rob him Tuesday night.

While detectives were interviewing him, the store owner's brother called to say he had just shot a man who tried to rob his store, Nino's Mini Market at 659 Washington Avenue, according to police.

Police arrived at the convenience store to find the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Christian Munoz, suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest. Munoz was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was prounounced dead, police said.

Police confirmed that Munoz was the same person suspected of trying to rob the Congress Mini Market. The stores are owned by the same family.

Detectives are interviewing the store owner who shot the suspected robber and said he has not been criminally charged. Police went door to door in the neighborhood Wednesday to speak with possible witnesses.

He was just trying to get money for his grandmother’s medicine. And some crack.

It is a happy ending. This is the cheapest route for tax payers — no court cost, no cost of prison, no cost of arresting him again after he’s released, etc.

I used to live in New Haven in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Congress Avenue was disparagingly called Congo Avenue because it was a jungle.

If you check the picture of the Congress Mini-Mart, you will see that the store is armored as is the access to the porch of the house to which it is attached.

Over the years the situation in that part of town has deteriorated, largely because of the politicians tying the hands of the police and repeatedly appointing perfumed princes as chiefs of the police department.

Given his name, likely a DREAMER. Oh well, I guess dreams do die, sometimes.
