Dems mull replacement options for Walsh (Montana Senate Seat)

Washington and Montana Democrats are mulling options for replacing Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) on the ballot as it looks increasingly likely that he'll exit the race.

Walsh, who canceled scheduled campaign events Tuesday and Wednesday, has made no public appearances since the weekend amidst increasing chatter that he plans to drop out of his race against Rep. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) in the wake of his plagiarism scandal. "He took a personal day yesterday," campaign spokeswoman Lauren Passalacqua told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Democrats in Montana and Washington, meanwhile, are increasingly expecting that Walsh will decide to withdraw from the race ahead of Monday's deadline. They are desperately casting about for a replacement who could ramp up quickly to challenge Daines or at least give them someone who won't hurt other Democrats on the ticket.

Montana Democratic Party spokesman Bryan Watt told the Montana Standard that Democrats "are looking at our process" of replacing Walsh should he decide to withdraw, though they haven't vetted individual candidates.

Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) has been mentioned by some Democrats, but it's unclear why he would choose to run now after taking a pass on the race earlier this year. Democrats think they might have a better shot at recruiting Montana native and former NARAL Pro-Choice America president Nancy Keenan (D), whom some have reached out to. Some Democrats have also mentioned little-known Montana state Sen. Dave Wanzenried (D) as a possible candidate.

Walsh has until next Monday to drop out, and Democrats have a bit more than a week after that to find a replacement.

The democrats' little appointment scheme has backfired. Baucus retired early so the governor could appoint Walsh to give him a leg up for November.

Now they're screwed!!

The Dems have no choice to but replace Walsh.

Otherwise the seat is a guaranteed GOP pickup.

Isn’t “plagiarism” considered a positive characteristic for a Dem candidate?
Don’t understand the fuss....

Doesn't matter that Schweitzer passed on the race earlier this year. The dems will tell him the good of the Party is at stake... and for democrats, nothing.. absolutely NOTHING trumps the good of the beloved Party.

In a state like Montana, who could run successfully as a 'democrat', when that is a synonym for 'gun grabber'?

This assumes that the people likely to vote Dem would care about plagarism.

Never think a victory at any level is a guarantee for the GOP.

If they cared about plagiarism, Joe Biden wouldn't be VP right now.

Walsh has been training from the beginning... I would not be in the least bit surprised if the dems set him up for this fall, so they could replace him with a sure win in Schweitzer.

Yes of course I agree. Anything can happen in politics.

But Walsh is in deep doo doo in a state that usually votes GOP in presidential elections.

There is nothing to mull here. The Dems need to get rid of him or they can kiss the seat goodbye IMHO.

I know Biden’s law school plagiarism never hurt him that badly. In fact, it helped him to a law degree.

Actually both their current senators are Democrats.
(Tester and Walsh).
While Walsh wasn’t elected, he was appointed to replace another elected Democrat (Baucus).

Montana has been Californicated, just like Colorado, only thankfully not as badly (yet).

And of course Biden was forced out of the 1988 presidential campaign after plagiarism speeches.

Indeed it is. In fact, I think Walsh is now a front runner for for this year’s Biden-Barnacle-Kernes-Goodwin Award.

Joe was just Slo Joe then as now, if it hadn’t been plagiarism, he would have blown it another way. VP selection is due to his progressive politics and equally his stupidity which keeps him from being a threat. It’s got to weigh on the minds of those thinking of impeachment.

Brian Schweitzer is no sure win for the Dems. He has his own baggage. Daines will win regardless of the nominee. The Dems are more concerned about trying to win back the House seat that they haven’t won in 20 years.
