How Pat Roberts and the GOP Lost Kansas
breitbart.com ^ | 8/6/14 | Dan Riehl

If you want to truly understand politics, especially of the Right-leaning variety, you'll have to look beyond the dumbed-down, self-congratulatory so called journalism of Beltway establishment publications like Politico.

Here is their headline out of Kansas: How Pat Roberts beat Milton Wolf. But the real story has to be read between the lines.

Pat Roberts’ narrower-than-expected win over challenger Milton Wolf on Tuesday night — came with a big lift from party headquarters in Washington.

The Republican Party threw everything they had behind Roberts .... and what did they get for it? Less than 50% of their own base vote, that's what. The anti-Roberts vote was split, not "defeated."

Roberts defeated Wolf, 48 percent to 41 percent; a pair of minor candidates combined for the remaining 11 percent of the vote.

The D.C. GOP consultant class can back-slap all they want. They may even dance themselves silly right out of their expensive loafers. Unfortunately, all the results from Kansas last night proved is that the Republican Party continues to be a party at odds with its base. Furthermore, if they continue to try and ignore that reality, anything and everything they think they are winning now will be wiped away with a disastrous defeat in 2016.

At this point, given the problems with their base voters, they may not even capture their coveted Senate majority in the Fall. Only able to capture 48% of their own vote, the Republican establishment did not emerge energized and victorious out of Kansas last night - what it did was throw just enough money at Kansas to enable an aging, out of touch politician to cling to power for just a few more years.

The GOPe will never drink the tea. They would rather the Rats win who they are more ideologically aligned with.

Good and on-point analysis.

Roberts should be in church thanking the Almighty that Kansas doesn’t have a runoff system for primaries. If they had, he’d be gone in the runoff.

If the base is this split then what doea that mean for the more moderate wing who likely sat the primary out? And come November it’s a three person race with Roberts the Republican, Taylor the Democrat, and Orman running as an independent. Orman’s center-right and would likely caucus with the GOP if elected. That might make him palatable enough for to get him elected.

First chance I get, I'm going to get my "party affiliation" changed (here in KS), as when I moved here, I declared myself "Libertarian." I had forgotten about this, and since KS has a closed primary, I wasn't able to vote for Milton Wolf.

Damn...

“The GOPe will never drink the tea....”

True, at least until the Tea Party base takes over and becomes the GOPe. The CURRENT GOPe would rather furtively sneak gulps of the DemocRATS’ kool aid.

Wow.

I didn't see the results until now.

48% for Roberts.

The GOPe strategy will fail in the general election.

Wait and see.

GOP strategy is to run out the clock. Enough discouraging losses and they figure tea party opposition will disappear and everyone will comeback.

Hey, 2014 isn't over yet. Let's wait and see if they really do win control of the Senate on November 4, 2014.

Not so. He'll serve for a year or so and then resign and turn that seat over to one of Haley Barbour's nephews.

I like your tagline but should you maybe slip “MS” in before the word “Republican”? Just sayin’

That’s very likely in MS, but not KS. I don’t think KS has had a Democrat senator in over 60 years.

Hate to say it, but even if the base stayed home in November and the GOP’s hopes of taking the Senate evapourated, the GOPe *still* wouldn’t get it.

What's the story on these two? How were they funded?

This is an interesting article and captures quite well the fundamental issue that faces conservatives. Like it or not, in a two party system, the Republican Party is the only option. But the arrogance and out of touch attitude that we saw from Pat Roberts is mirrored by many of his supporters, including ones on this forum. They insist that we sit in the corner and shut up and accept what’s good for us.

Throwing Roberts suddenly repaired voting record does not obviate the fact that he has ignored much of Kansas in favor of the well lobbied factions, and does not change the fact that by not living here, he has truly lost touch. He is a quintessential Washington insider and he does not understand that we are very tired of that sort of politics.

All of those who are gloating over his great “victory” will continue to ignore the fundamental problems that the conservative base has been shouting from the mountaintops, such as they are out here in the heartland.

Haven’t seen squat-ola on the boob tube from the GOPe candidate, Gillespie, running against Warner for the senate...seems a total loss right now.
Can’t help but wonder if this wasn’t a complete inside job, having a whuss run...
We need closed primaries in VA, not convention selection.
