A Missouri inmate was put to death Wednesday for raping and killing a college student in 1995, making him the first U.S. prisoner put to death since an Arizona lethal injection went awry last month.
When the drugs began flowing, his head lowered back to the pillow and he appeared to breathe heavily for about 15 seconds before closing his eyes. Some of his witnesses began crying after he fell unconscious.
Texas and Missouri instead administer a single large dose of pentobarbital — often used to treat convulsions and seizures and to euthanize animals. Missouri changed to pentobarbital late last year and since has carried out executions during which inmates showed no obvious signs of distress.
DNA tests later linked Worthington to the slaying.

What’s a more merciful death IMO is a bunch of firing squad bullets with expert aim to the heart and be done with it faster. Do it outside for easier blood cleanup. Hard to botch that quick death up.
Why didn’t they withhold food until he died? I hear that is a very humane way to die.
Personally I think we should experiment with exploding hats. That is, headgear holding shaped charges. Destroying the brain in microseconds would be more painless than destroying the heart. Messier though.

Brilliant! Don’t forget withholding water as well, works faster and just as humane. Also vacuuming off limbs is kind and painless, as is a massive saline injection.
Why bother with the headgear? From the conclusion of an old movie; insert a fragmentation grenade in the inmate’s mouth, pull the pin and step behind the blast shield. Quick, cheaper, but still messy.
Guillotine-—rapid head severing. Quick neat cut and less gore—just bloody. Sow the head back on later for open casket viewing if necessary.
Zero chance of painful lingering on.
This is still far more expensive and prone to appeal than is the firing squad. I truly do not see the reason for any aversion to its use. States should at least allow it for cases in which there is “any question” (that is, appeal), of any other form of execution.
In Utah, the firing squad is available as an option of *choice* for the condemned; so this is legitimate. Death row prisoners could have a *choice* of lethal injection, or if they appealed it for any reason, it would be a *choice* on their part to face the firing squad.
I'd like to see it at least tried. They could do trials on animals, and it might even prove a more humane and less cumbersome way of euthanizing dogs and cats, or stunning livestock prior to slaughter.

The Muzzies have a good way to do this. Strap explosives to the convicted. Step away and then press the button. Should be a quick death and maybe the deceased can meet Allah on his way to Hades.
It’s not humane. Already tried with animals. They struggle to find air.

I have seen lots of mice euthanized by CO2 asphyxiation. I certainly hope they don’t suffer but they sure jump around a lot.
