Dem Civil Rights Leader: Limit College Free Speech Because Kids Can’t Process It
Independent Journal Review ^ | August 3 2014 | Jennifer Van Laar

Posted on 08/03/2014 3:28:48 PM PDT by PoloSec

A Democrat U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner made a rambling argument suggesting that certain speech should be outlawed on college campuses.

According to The Daily Caller, Michael Yaki, also a former senior adviser to Nancy Pelosi (shocking), made his comments during a briefing last week.

The civil rights commissioner said he favors outlawing speech that would be grossly unpopular, such as “a slave auction at a fraternity engagement” or a celebration of Latino culture that involves “making everyone dress as janitors and mop floors.”

Are parties like that such a big problem on campuses? (No.) On occasion, a poorly-thought-out themed event will occur, but isn’t that the perfect opportunity for students to learn about what is socially acceptable through peer pressure?

Yaki’s reasoning for wishing to limit First Amendment protections on campus is that there’s a large group of people whose brains have not yet fully developed living in a “geographically compact” area and they need to create a “campus atmosphere” (read: confirmity of thought).

Unfortunately, college campuses are not known for allowing free speech or free thought. Conservative speakers are routinely harassed, protested against, or even prohibited from speaking on college campuses. A study showed that over 70 percent of campuses already have regulations limiting free speech.

A college education should include exposure to different ideas and theories and the development of critical thinking skills, which is possibly what this commissioner is afraid of.

Would he also agree that since their minds aren’t fully formed, that the voting age should be raised to 40?

They can’t resist taking potshots at the Constitution. How shallow and superficial those founders were, compared to the unremitting genius of this intellectual class.

And disagreeing with the political orthodoxy will mean no degree will be given. It is happening already. The University of Minnesota School of Education has stated that any student who believes that an inner city youth can indeed be academically successful will not be allowed to graduate.

America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

I like the comment in this story from The Conservative Treehouse

…. which begs the ultimate “D’oh” question: So why allow them to vote ?

the voting age should be raised to 40?

I'd settle for 30, with a minimum age to hold office at 40.

it already is limited; try arguing a conservative point of view in a college and see what happens....

i did this in 1984 when a communications professor railed against Reagan getting re-elected as i stood up and asked “What would Mondale do for the country? he’s part of the Carter administration”...

rest assured I paid for my relevant question asked in the spirit of the First Amendment with a full letter grade...

“making everyone dress as janitors and mop floors.”

WHen the local chapter of the Latin Kings crashes the party the "problem" will take care of itself.
