Ohio (Toledo area) Water crisis: still waiting for answers
ABC13 ^ | 08/01/14 | Jonathan Keilholz

Posted on 08/02/2014 2:08:10 PM PDT by machogirl

Governor John Kasich has issued a state of emergency for Lucas County and surrounding communities due to algae toxins detected in the water during routine testing.

Do not drink the water. Alternative water should be used for drinking, making infant formula, making ice, brushing teeth and preparing food. Pets should not drink the water.

Do not boil the water.. Boiling the water will not destroy the toxins. It will increase the concentration of the toxins.

Consuming water containing algal toxins may result in abnormal liver function, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, numbness or dizziness. Seek medical attention if you feel you have been exposed to algal toxins and are having adverse health effects. Skin contact with contaminated water can cause irritation or rashes. Contact a veterinarian immediately if pets or livestock show signs of illness.

I knew something was going to happen.

Yesterday I cleaned out the garage and tossed 4 dozen empty 2 liter bottles.

Haven’t heard that it’s that area. Toledo and Lower Michigan.

I lived in that area for a long time. It seems to me that algae blooms happened every year in Lake Erie; especially in a warm year. Now it seems it is a disaster. Just saying...

You could drink water straight from Lake Erie with one of these:

I believe you’re right. When I moved to Ohio for college, the locals in Franklin County ; Columbus, Westerville and such, were still talking about it.

Boil first, and then through the Berkey?

Its a toxcin not a biological. That is why boiling doesn’t work. The toxin is made by the algae.

The type of algae has changed is what has happened. Over the last decade or so there’s been in shift in what becomes prevalent.

Blue-green algae/cyanobacteria is now the leading bloom type.

Thank you for the heads up, NYTexan.

Bryan and I are safe, far enough away from Lake Erie so that it does not affect us. Very nice of you to be concerned, but we have a well pump and septic system, purification system, and drinking water reverse osmosis unit.

I’m pretty sure that mylife’s and thackney’s relatives are all right too.

Everyone is fine.
They are all 65 mi below the eastern deep end of the lake and get water form local reservoirs.

Ohio is very roughly square shaped (emphasis on the roughly). Columbus is smack dab in the middle. Toledo is sort of in the upper left or northwest corner. A driving chart puts the distance between them at 129 miles but probably less as the crow flies. Hope this helps.
