The Most Dangerous Moment in Gaza: What happens if this conflict comes off the rails?
The Atlantic ^ | August 1, 2014 | Jeffrey Goldberg

Posted on 08/01/2014 11:29:44 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It is too early to say anything definitive about the Hamas decision to apparently break the ceasefire and attack an Israeli position, except that if it is true, as reports indicate, that Hamas militants came through a tunnel and carried underground and back into Gaza a live Israeli captive, then this moment could represent not another terrible, dispiriting incident in a terrible, dispiriting mini-war, but a fairly decisive turning point in which all swords are unsheathed.

This is assuming—as seems probable, but not 100 percent certain—that this raid is even what the Hamas leadership wanted (for what it's worth, its leaders, at the moment, seem to be owning this raid, suggesting that they are indeed doubling down in their war on Israel). If the events of earlier today happened as initial reports depict, then Israel will consider this incident an engraved invitation from Hamas to launch something close to a full-scale invasion of Gaza. Here are the factors that could lead Israel to decide to go all-in:

a) The compact between the Israeli army and Israeli parents is simple: You give us your sons, and we will do whatever we can to keep them alive. This includes conducting operations that get other soldiers killed. There will be near-unanimity in Israel that this soldier should be rescued, regardless of price to Israel, or certainly to the Palestinians in Gaza.

b) There is near-unanimity in Israel already that Hamas represents an unbearable threat. Add in the perfidy of a raid conducted after a ceasefire went into effect and near-unanimity becomes total unanimity....

The sooner Israel takes the Emperor Palatine approach to the Palestinians, the better.

Add to the mix that the Egyptians are nearly as fed up as the Israelis about the raids from Gaza.

Plus Saudi Arabia is taking a less anti-Israel stand on the issue than ObaMao.

The Pallies may have screwed the pooch this time.

Oops, that’s “Palpatine”, not Palatine.

Still Palestinians, though.

Prime Minister Netayahu,

It is time to clear out the rats nest. ENOUGH messing around with the lives of your soldier for no permanent gain, ENOUGH of your citizens cowering in bomb shelters, ENOUGH pandering to the opinion and “sensibitlities” of a world that doesn’t care a whit for Israel, and would actually prefer to see it destroyed and its citizens mass murdered. ENOUGH kissing the hind quarters of a Leftist Moslem-sympathizer who has done everything within his power to help Hamas and the Moslem Brotherhood throughout the Middle East and to weaken Israel. FINISH OFF HAMAS!

Hamas delenda est!

“The world doesn’t care a whit about ISRAEL.” Does anyone else sense that the WORLD doesn’t care a whit about the WORLD?
Christians being slaughtered and driven out throught the Islamic world. Muslims being passionately butchered by fellow muslims throught the Islamic world. The United States, the ONLY country with the proven ability and willingness to assist around the world, vilified and scorned.
A plague to rival the Black Death blossoming throughout central Africa...sound of silence. Terror groups slaughtering their own and destroying what has been built. Europe, without protest, allows hordes of new “CITIZENS” to begin tearing their countries down. When did Neville Chamberlain take control of Europe?
Yet from “our” media and the vaunted United Nitwits we hear merely the latest accusation tossed out against Israel, and where possible...the United States.
The world doesn’t give a damn about the world.

Israel (and the United States as well) has always been a foil that the Arab leadership has used to deflect blame and anger form the Arab Street away from their corruption and inability to provide a decent life for their subjects and to pin Arab the blame on Israel and to focus Arab anger and hate towards Israel.

If Israel is gone, the blame will fall on them and their heads will decorate the flag poles if their countries. On the other hand, if they push the hate to the boiling point, they will be forced to war with Israel.

Besides, the Muslim Brotherhood is the enemy of of the entire middle east right now and the Arabs have common cause with Israel in the fight against the MB /p>

A helluva gamble, agree to the cease fire in order to grab for the golden hostage, knowing Kerry and Øbama have your back.

The Israeli soldier and others killed wouldn’t have happened if not for Kerry twisting BB’s arms for a cease fire for the 4th time.

Ham@ss had not responded to a cease fire the first 3 times. This time they had a plan to make Israelis let their guard down so under the white flag of cease fire Ham@ss
used it to kidnap an Israeli and mortar and kill Israeli soldiers ending the 90 minute old cease fire.

The next time Hamas or anybody else asks the Israelis for a cease fire the answer ought to be a simple “no”. That should serve to change the situation on the ground quite a bit.

This is on John Effing Kerry. This was not a humanitarian ceasefire, it was a murder/kidnapping raid ceasefire.

Hamas figures that this is the best time to attack Israel for several reasons.

1)because Bath House Barry is going to let them (maybe even assist them probably already has assisted them).

2) the media will cover for them,

3)the White Hut will hamstring Israel,

4) they figure that they may actually win something of value this time.

One has to look down the road a month or two and ask,

what does Hamas expect to get out of this?

Obviously they want total victory, but they know that they aren’t going to get that at this time.

More land ? East Jerusalem? the Golan Heights? more money(most likely)? more supporters, increased world stature as a regional power. A bigger army with the help of their muslim friends as the only power capable of taking on Israel and winning? All of the above?

Obviously there his a short term goal and that is an increased stature in the muslim world, and greater international recognition.

If they get obliterated like Israel did repeatedly to Arafat and Fatah, then they are doomed.

I tend to think that this is a power struggle between Hamas (Sunni) and Hezbollah (Shiite) for regional power, in the absence of Assad/Iran.

Since Assad was a patron of Hezbollah (Shiite) and is up to his earlobes in ISIS (Sunni), this is about the Sunni’s taking a greater role in driving the muslim world.

This is about “face” and bravado, and who can do the most damage to Israel, and not get crushed by them in response. Look how Hezbollah did the same drill in Lebanon years ago until Israel decided to crush them. That was much less populated, and they had Assad and the Iranians helping with weapons and supplies.

After this—NO MORE PEACE—Let lose the Dogs of War. No peace—only Victory. Drive the Hama fighters and their supporters into the sea. Depopulate Gaza—replace it with Christians and Jews—NO ISLAMIC People at all! (You could get alot of Christains from Iraq these days).

Reminds me of WWII: Early on in the Pacific the Marines encountered Japanese troops carrying a white flag.
When the Marines lowered their guard the Japanese soldier fired on them. After that the Marines stopped taking Japanese prisoners.

If by “off the rails,” he means more bloody fighting, the answer is that Israel will completely wipe out Hamas and kill a large number of terrorists.

Israel has to eliminate the threat once and for all. Stop playing footsie- wootsie. Get the job done and let foreigners scream as loudly as they want.
