European Union slaps new, stronger sanctions on Russia

The 28-nation European Union agreed Tuesday on stronger economic sanctions against Russia amid ongoing anger concerning the conflict in eastern Ukraine and the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the great majority of whose passengers were Europeans..

As expected, the sanctions -- to be outlined in detail Wednesday -- will target selected sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, finance and defense. New arms deals, exports of energy and oil-drilling technologies, and sales of items with both civilian and military applications will be forbidden.

An “unusual trend” in imports makes me think it’s Russians buying up stuff they fear might be embargoed. High tech gear, etc.

Thanks for that history,, German shepherds and other dogs must have made the bunker a little pungent. Probably why PhotoOpObama tried to get out of the WH so much.

Does that mean they are not going to buy the oil and gas anymore?

Quoting from the TELEGRAPH article:

"The Kremlin can in theory use gas as a diplomatic weapon but this would ravage Russia’s own economy. It would not achieve much at this time of the year in any case since Europe has built up large gas reserves.

The EU has huge spare capacity for imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and there is no longer an acute shortage of global LNG supplies. Several pipelines have been modified since 2009 so that gas can be funnelled both ways, reaching most EU areas. Both Poland and Lithuania will be opening new LNG terminals this year.

Even if Russian cut off gas to Europe, the West could meet its power needs by a variety of means. “If we have to, we can fire up a lot of idle coal-powered plants. It would take time, but only months,” said Professor Alan Riley, from City University.

“The real danger is that we hit Russia too hard and crash the whole Russian economy. Nobody wants to do that,” he said.

If Romney were in power, we would have declared Russia a terrorist state and slapped sanctions similar to what Iran and North Korea have on it right now. We would have also engaged in a massive arms buildup in Eastern Europe and sent in special forces to help the Ukrainians. We would also have given the Israelis a free hand in dealing with Hamas. And, finally, we would be building up our forces in the Eastern Pacific to hold China at bay.

Finally, the sanctions would not only be slapped on Russia, but also on Belarus, Kazakhstan, and other CIS states.

The article you posted is from 21st and it expressed doubts if Europe actually manages to get itself together and enact the phase 3 sanctions. Today we know Europe did.

It’s still small change and symbolic. You can’t do economic sanctions on a country with that much land mass and resources. It would be harder than putting economic sanctions on the United States.

You can, you just probably wont keep them. Russia is a natural resource exporter, if the west doesn’t buy their assets, china will.

Putin should just get it over with and send his whole army into Crimea to crush the Ukrainian one. The euros and Obama will throw a fit but ultimately do nothing. Backing down on the other hand will hurt Russia’s gains.

If I were Putin I’d take the territory and wait out the ‘sanctions’.

“Putin apologists seem to have gone into hiding.”
Putin apologist? Why would anyone apologize for Putin?

I for one never cared if Russia took over Crimina . It makes no difference to my country or my state, and to be honest I believe it makes little difference to Crimina either.(not that that should matter to us either) Crimea has belonged to Russia far longer than it belonged to the Ukraine.

But the bottom line is, Supporting the Ukraine who has done or offered nothing to us only undercuts the value of the MUTUAL defense alliances we do have.

There is nothing to be gained for theses united States to rise to the Ukraine’s defense. We only risk economic relations with Russia which is important, and as i mentioned before undercut the value of alliances.(why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?)

I am entirely against involvement of any kind for that reason. Am I apologizing for Putin? No I honestly don’t think Putin has anything to apologize to us or Europe.

Putin is a strong leader, and does what he thinks is right for RUSSIA. If Putin had been born an American, and had the ambitions and connections he did to rise to power in Russia, America and the world would be much different today.

Our border would be secure, Gaza would be Israels. We would have won the war in Iraq, and Afghanistan or at least likely still be there planning on winning. Our economy would be booming, because we would be drilling in our massive untapped oil deposits. Faggots would not be getting into the army. America would be a much greater place with a character as strong as Putin but with more wisdom and restraint in charge. He’s a patriot, I cannot think of any other word. Some of the things he has done are pretty terrible. I don’t see how someone could not admire the man. But that’s just me. Ukraine was a part of Russia longer than it wasn’t. He wants the USSR back. So what? If we had lost WWII and America was carved up, wouldn’t some of us want America back? Of course.

Too bad he wasn’t born an American.

[All of this crap, thousands dead, cities destroyed, families separated. And all Obama had to say was, “tomorrow Keystone will be fast tracked.”]

And announce a plan to dump 25 percent of the U.S. strategic oil reserve on the market.
