We’ve grown accustomed to senseless liberal logic insinuating that anything that has to do with the color spectrum is somehow racist or racially charged, however; the most recent attack by The Guardian filth-spiller, Tracy van Slyke, is so stupid it just made me chuckle.

For the record, all the “villains” on Thomas and Friends are the dirty diesel engines. I’d like to think there was a good environmental message in there, but when the good engines pump out white smoke and the bad engines pump out black smoke – and they are all pumping out smoke – it’s not hard to make the leap into the race territory.
As a kid I watched Thomas all the time, I had a life-sized Thomas and a play board for all the trains to travel around on. I loved trains. That’s why I loved the show. The characters and the plots also instilled a message of friendship and hard work, but racism? Ms. van Slyke must be inhaling some of that racist steam she is ranting about.

Here is a video of a steam engine being started. There is no narration, but you can see the smoke coming out the smokestack and the steam being released at the wheels.

But, for some reason, you see a lot more black guys driving white Cadillacs than you see white guys driving black Cadillacs. Why do you suppose that is?

After expansion, the spent steam is channeled to the stack, where the venturi effect draws the combustion gases to clear the firebox for fresh air. Next time you see a steam locomotive, watch the stack. It “puffs” when the slide valves release the spent steam. That is also why steam locomotives needed to constantly refill with water, as they only used the steam one, and the water was lost to atmosphere.
LOL. The only conspiracy is that the diesels are plotting to take over and make the steam engines obsolete, but we know that would never happen.
The steam you see being released there is through the drains, as the cylinders are warming. Under load, those are closed. But what would I know, I have only spent my career working with steam.

white water vapor also is released from the top portion from the relief valve and whistle. I think the confusion relates to how diesel engines emit cleaner emissions which are lighter colored than the heavy, dark smoke from a coal-fired steam train.

Actually a lot of steam does exhaust through the smokestack. The reason for doing this is to increase the draft. The faster the engine runs, the more steam goes up the stack, the higher the draft, and the hotter the fire.
A positive feedback to make sure the fire draws sufficient air. It’s a design that began with the very first steam locomotives and continued until the demise of steam and the rise of the evil and boring diesel.
There’s a tube called a blastpipe that discharges exhaust steam from the cylinders directly into the smokebox below the stack. More modern locomotives also employ an auxiliary blower that routes steam directly into the smokebox without going through the cylinders, for times when increased draft is needed and the amount of exhaust from the cylinders isn’t sufficient.

Except for the magnificent Mallet locomotives with their high pressure cylinders in back and low pressure cylinders in front. The N&W Y6b being one of my favorites.
Yes, the double expansion did get more use from the energy in the steam/water, but then the water was lost after the low pressure expansion. A condenser would be far and away too large a weight penalty, as it could only use atmosphere to cool, and the fans would use all the energy produced to condense the still hot low pressure steam.

There was more than a few times Sponge Bob made me uncomfortable watching with my kids. Not just the more than enough homo references, but the grotesque images they would make the characters. Very evil, IMHO.
A thread on arcane railroad knowledge could keep some of us busy for a long time.
