Tea party candidate targets Lamar Alexander in Tennessee

Will he lose like Cantor or survive like Cochran?

LAFOLLETTE, Tenn. - The crowd of well-wishers swarms around Sen. Lamar Alexander as soon as he walks through the door.

“I haven’t seen you in a hundred years!” he says, pumping the hand of a grey-haired man in a navy suit.

For the next half-hour, the senator works the room like the seasoned politician he is. There’s lots of handshaking, lots of small talk, lots of patiently posing for cellphone photos and, no doubt, lots of thinking in the room about what a difficult year this has been for entrenched incumbents like Alexander.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor suffered a stunning loss in Virginia, and Sen. Thad Cochran had a scare in Mississippi. And those two races have invigorated tea party groups, who are now gunning for Alexander.

When he finally takes the microphone at the Campbell County Lincoln-Reagan Day Dinner, where the main speaker will be former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Alexander jokes that he’s like a warm-up act at the Grand Ole Opry. But when he segues to the matter on everyone’s mind – this fall’s elections and, specifically, his own bid for a third Senate term – the warm-up artist disappears and the skilled campaigner is suddenly center stage.

“We have an election coming up this November in which we have a chance to have a (Senate) Republican majority,” Alexander says, looking beyond Tennessee’s Aug. 7 primary and casting his race as a piece of a larger political puzzle.

Even if we lose primaries, we should keep at it and strive to increase the pressure on incumbents EACH and EVERY election cycle.

Alexander was a squish when he was a student at Vanderbilt and is still a squish. No conservative convictions, just mush.

Once a squish, always a squish.

That’s the goal! We’ve been emptying their “warchests” and the good from the bad are being smoked out!

Is his opponent a good candidate like Brat or a complete jackass like McDaniel and his breaking and entering buddies?

It's a legitimate question. Why are you pushing a zot? Were you with the people breaking into nursing homes, locked with ballots or acting like Al Gore when the results didn't go your way?

I'm not against the tea party. I voted Santorum. I opposed Romney more than 90% of the people here. I'm against poor candidates and I don't know anything about Alexander's opponent. If he has a good head on his shoulders like David Brat, I'll send a check. If he's McDaniel and his most vocal supporters, forget it.

I don't know where NEWNET5 is located, but it sure takes the news a long time to reach them. That Campbell County dinner was 10 days ago and the first half of Collin's article was written by others on 7/13. Heck, I could give them a more current news tip. Laura Ingraham is speaking for Joe Carr tonight in Nashville.

BTW, in one of Alexander's television ads Huckabee swears up and down that Alexander is a conservative. LOLLLLLLL

Falling for those left wing lies and tacticts I see. The Cochran camp peddaled that crap so it must be true.

Opponent is a conservative TN State Rep, who does NOT know how to run a state wide campaign. Has totally ignored West TN. Sticks close to his home district.

When I went to the Doctor’s on Monday for Lab work, I passed 3 open early voting sites, NO CARR signs. At my own voting site there were none either.

But then again lamar is not really running a campaign, he knows name will get him re-elected. He breaks the 2 Terms and OUT oath he made. Pro amnesty, pro 0 care, it was his cloture vote that let the beast out of committee.
