Legendary actor James Garner -- star of "The Rockford Files" and "The Notebook" -- has died ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell us an ambulance was dispatched to the actor's home in Los Angeles around 8PM Saturday evening ... and he was dead when they arrived on scene.
We do not know his cause of death at this time.

RIP. Loved Garner in everything he did - Maverick, Rockford Files, Great Escape, Murphy’s Romance, etc. Heck, he was even good in that silly little movie with C. Thomas Howell and Shirley Jones “Tank”.

All I could find was “settled out of court”. And neither side is allowed to disclose what they settled for
James Garner was similar to Dean Martin, in that they did great performances for their directors, made it seem easy. Both actors looked as though they were having fun most of the time while filming. I recall people on the Dean Martin Show saying he never even rehearsed with the rest of the cast. Both men were quick study’s and quite versatile in acting range. Neither seemed to take himself that seriously. Of course, the nonchalance and appearance of being indifferent could also have been an act, the way a trapeze artist must be a true expert before he can dance on the tightropes.
I will always be a big fan of Mr. Garner. Garner did a movie where he drove his car into the pool. That scene always cracks me up. The movie was The Thrill of It All (1963) with Doris Day.

Yes. He got his High School diploma in the Army and in Korea, he was the Company "scrounger", a role he was right at home with once again in The Great Escape.
One of their best episodes was the parody of Gunsmoke. Way ahead of its time.

My Dad loved the old Maverick show. Garner had great comedic timing.
He was also a race car driver.
