The Stories of Britons Included in Death Toll of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17

Among the 298 passengers and crew who were killed on board Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, ten were travelling on British passports.

The six named so far include two students, two devout football fans and one a former BBC journalist and press officer for the World Health Organisation.

The death toll also includes 154 people from the Netherlands, 45 from Malaysia (including all 15 crewmembers) and 27 Australians. Families in Indonesia, Germany and Belgium also lost loved one, while 41 of the victims have not yet been unverified.

These are the stories of the Britons confirmed to have lost their lives.

Glenn Thomas (Picture: SWNS) Mr Thomas, 49, was a former BBC World News journalist originally from Blackpool who had been working as a media officer for the World Health Organisation (WHO).

A moment of silence was held today at a WHO press conference and a spokesman said he would be ‘remembered for his ready laugh and his passion for public health’.

The two devoted fans were known to Toon staff and supporters alike as they followed not only the first team but also academy and reserve sides throughout the year.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew said a few words about the two men: ‘Myself and all the players are deeply shocked and saddened by this terrible news.

‘Our hearts go out to their families and friends.’

He was on his way to Perth, Australia where he was to spend six months studying at the University of Western Australia and six months in a professional placement.

His family published the following statement: ‘Ben is going to be terribly missed not only by his family but by the wider Keynsham community where he made so many long-lasting friends.’

Richard Mayne, 20 (Picture: SWNS) Richard Mayne, 20, from Leicestershire was a student at Leeds University and had recently raised money for a charity trek to Everest base camp.

John Wood, the headteacher at Mr Mayne’s old school, Dixie Grammar, said: ‘It is tragic that his life has been cut short, especially under these circumstances – he had such a great future ahead of him.’

Cameron Dalziel

He was a rescue helicopter pilot, 43, who had been sent to the Netherlands for a training exercise.
