Air Force command nominee is 1st woman, non-pilot
The Washington Times ^ | July 17, 2014 | Rowan Scarborough

The White House has picked the first female general to head the Air Force in the Pacific, which will make her the first non-pilot to command air power in such a large theater of operation.

The Pentagon announced this week that Air ForceLt. Gen. Lori J. Robinson has been nominated for promotion to four-star general and as commander of Pacific Air Forces, the Air Force component of U.S. Pacific Command. It is a major combatant command whose air, ground and naval forces have broad responsibility for security in the Asia-Pacific region. Her nomination was sent to the Senate for confirmation.

Officials said pilots historically have commanded Air Force war-fighting components for the Pacific and for U.S. Air Forces Europe; Air Forces Central, which covers the Middle East and Afghanistan; and the 1st Air Force, which is part of Northern Command and protects U.S. skies.

Gen. Robinson is not a career pilot. Her military profession is air battle manager. She has served aboard the Air Force’s surveillance aircraft, the E-3 AWACs and E-8 JSTARS, and she was nominated for a promotion amid a drive for more diversity in the Pentagon.

A retired pilot said there is a reason the Air Force historically has put a pilot in charge of large combatant command Air Forces.

“she was nominated for a promotion amid a drive for more diversity in the Pentagon”

She has no qualifications for the position. She is an affirmative action candidate who will make things worse.

How is it possible to be a freaking four-star general in the AIR FORCE and not be a PILOT?!

How can she even look her own staff in the eyes?

This is madness.

and she was nominated for a promotion amid a drive for more diversity in the Pentagon.

If she had any pride at all in her profession, she would turn down this promotion based only on the fact that the WH is admitting that she is being nominated not because she is qualified (which she might be) but because they need diversity at the Pentagon.

What an insult to her accomplishments (whatever they might be).

That’s correct...By precedent she’s not qualified for this command because she isn’t a pilot but she may be well qualified for a command in her field.

An AF 4 star and no gray hair? Did they rush her up the ranks at ludicrous speed?

Are they rushing them all up the ranks now?

Do you wonder if there are any Admirals in the navy that can't operate a ship? Any Marines Generals that didn't qualify with a Rifle?

Up is down and good is evil. Lord help us.

The government basically downplayed her real accomplishments and gave her this job only because they wanted diversity. They didn’t care about whether or not she was qualified, they only cared that she wasn’t a white guy.

Again, if she had any pride in that uniform, she would turn down the “promotion” and indicate that she would not want to take a position where anyone would question her abilities and in this case, because the reason for her promotion was stated by the White House to be diversity rather than competency, that she is turning it down.

But I’m guessing that the only reason she was promoted to General in the first place was because she was a woman. She is obviously more than happy to ride the affirmative action elevator to the top.

The 0bama administration has been very good to her, from Brigadier General to four star in six years if she’s confirmed.

She is a Fellow of the Brookings Institution.

That, in and of itself, puts her beyond the pale as a Flag Officer.

Just my opinion of course.
