West Texas state school in Pyote recommended as shelter

PYOTE A building that has stood vacant in the small, rural community of Pyote in West Texas could help house unaccompanied minors if given approval by the federal government.

Odessa’s Una Voz Unida Founder and President Art Leal said his organization received an inquiry from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on places that could be used to house unaccompanied children as they wait for their court date.

“We started thinking what we have around this area that would meet this criteria - I thought about the school in Pyote,” Leal said.

The West Texas State School was a facility used by the Texas Youth Commission to help house the state’s youngest inmates between the ages of 10 and 21. The facility was originally the site of operations for the 697th Air Control and Warning Squadron at the Pyote Air Base in 1958, according to the Texas State Historical Association. When the base closed in 1963, the Texas Youth Council began work on a children's home and the Texas legislature appropriated $200,000 for renovations in 1965. The West Texas Children's Home of Pyote opened for neglected children in 1966. The home changed from an orphanage to a state school for juvenile male offenders in the 1980s. The facility changed the name to West Texas State School in 1990.

At its height prior to 2007, more than 300 employees worked and 270 youths lived at the facility.

The West Texas State School officially became the property of University Lands, overseen by the University of Texas System, in 2010.

The Texas Youth Commission transferred the assets of the facilities totaling 200,000 square feet to University Lands and that organization became responsible for upkeep.

Una Voz Unida Founder and President Art Leal ..... is he half Hispanic or just a traitor to his race?

This is the first time I’ve seen FEMA mentioned. As they get all these facilities in working order they’ll be waiting for Americans to be “housed”.

A Facebook group page called “Protect Texas” will be protesting North Texas cities who have agreed to help house the surge of illegal immigrant minors on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Una Voz Unida of Odessa is hoping to rally as many residents in the Permian Basin to join them in a counter protest against this group.

Other organizations such as League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and Proyecto Unidos will also be participating in the counter protest.
