In June Senator Thad Cochran won the GOP primary runoff election over conservative challenger Chris McDaniel after 25,000-35,000 Democrats helped push him to victory. Cochran and the Republican establishment also were behind the racist anti-Tea Party ads that ran in Mississippi prior to the runoff election.

Thad Cochran won the election over Chris McDaniel by 6,880 votes in the June 24 runoff.

Words describing ballots as “questionable” and some voters as “ineligible to participate” seem weak to me, which is odd if laws were “unquestionably” broken.

Me too. I agree with you.

“questionable” may refer to whether McDaniel or Cochran got the vote from that ballot. Once the number of questionable ballots exceeds the margin of victory, the outcome of the contest is questionable too.

“ineligible to participate” refers to those who appear to have voted in the Dem primary earlyer.
MS law forbids that.

Yes, I know. The problem is that, at least at this point, it doesn’t sound like they have found enough of the inelgible votes to force a new runoff. To me that is a bit troubling. It would be nice if they didn’t need to count on any other category of problem ballots since they are likely to be contested.

Exactly.

McDaniel can’t prove the 8,300 DemocRats who crossed over illegally (after voting in the Dem primary) would necessarily have voted for him (McDaniel).

He can only show the votes are in question. There’s enough of them to go well over the margin of victory.

Therefore, the election itself is in question.

Therefore, the only available remedy is to order a new election.

But, yes. Now it’s up to the judicial system. Likely could go federal as there’s a disenfrancisement issue after the state remedies are exhausted.

I agree. I don’t see how this is going to end up good for McDaniel regardless of outcome, and in fact, he’s slitting his throat for any future job in politics.

I’ve taken a lot of heat here by stating that he should have bitten his upper lip...swallowed hard and accepted defeat. By doing that he would show clearly to everyone that he’s the better man...and fight another day. Instead, he comes across as a sore loser.

Forget it. The other side won this time. Your chance will come again, but drop this nonesense about expecting to have a fair day in court in the State of MS.

I agree with what you’re saying, but a lot of people which to see us self destruct in a cause that will go no where.

Who’s to say that Cochran’s followers did rise up and vote for him during the runoff, when they stayed home intitally.

Secondly, he appealed to the black vote. Good for him! McDaniel should have too, but he didn’t.

Yes, I agree this time with what Ann C is saying. She gives pretty good history on this. McDaniel is looking like a sore loser.

I can here the key boards going crazy in response to the two of us.

You and Ann Coulter are under the mistaken view that what's important here is a peaceful surrender, lest McDaniel harm his fictional future political chances with the Mississippi GOP Establishment, who will surely next time embrace the guy they called a racist who was trying to keep black people from voting.

No.

What's important here is disemboweling the GOP-E when they resort to the treacherous things they did to us in Mississippi. It would be an even better message if we could get enough people on our side to vote for his opponent in the General Election, in order to deny them the seat, and perhaps the Senate majority.

I want Thad Cochran to lose more than I want anything else from this November election. That's where the GOP has put me after what they did in Mississippi. I would rather Harry Reid stay Majority Leader than have Thad Cochran win another term in the Senate. If they do what they did and enjoy tremendous, overwhelming success for doing it, you can bet they will do much worse to us EVERY time from now on.

I know some on the right have criticized McDaniel for continuing to challenge the results, saying it is destroying his future political hopes.

However, I think we are all better off with a McDaniel with no future in politics, and the GOPe ridded of corrupt elements who see incumbency as the highest political virtue, than with a corrupt GOP with McDaniel as a future member.

Over and over I have seen on Freerepublic the demand that politicians on our side fight rather than surrender close elections.

The “progressives” never let a close election go uncontested, it seems, and it never seems to hurt them.

This is all about “image”, claim those who want McDaniel not to fight.

Guess what. The other side controls to image machine, if we let them. We will always lose these close elections if we let the other side intimidate us by calling names. We are reaching a tipping point where the old media no longer has the resources to control the flow of information, and who is called what.

I say fight. If we win, it is a great victory. If we lose, we are not worse off than we were before. I do not see the downside that the naysayers here seem to.
