The New Conservative Purity Test: Impeaching Obama
The Daily Beast ^ | Friday, July 11, 2014 | David Freedlander

It’s now the extreme dividing line among the GOP’s base: Do you want to impeach the president or not? Why Republicans with long memories are worried about where all this is headed.

There was a time not long ago when leaders in the Republican Party favored a cap-and-trade system to deal with the threat of global warming. And there was a time when the party coalesced around the idea of immigration reform. There was a time when it seemed suicidal to much of the party to not raise the debt ceiling.

But each of those issues shifted quickly at some point to become dividing lines for the base, one in which being on the wrong side meant talk-radio ridicule and threats of a primary challenge.

The latest out-of-left field litmus test? Do you want to impeach President Obama, or not?

This particular line entered the bloodstream this week thanks to Sarah Palin, who on Tuesday authored an op-ed on Breitbart News in which she wrote that “Enough is enough of the years of abuse from this president. His unsecured border crisis is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ‘no mas.’”

On Wednesday, the influential talk-radio host Mark Levin, who has previously called for the president’s impeachment, endorsed Palin’s comments. “She stands with the Framers. So, what is [House Speaker John] Boehner’s answer? What are the Republicans going to do? They’re going to wait for the next election? That doesn’t fix it.”

The notion of an impeachment has created such a flurry that it has become a question that seemingly all Republicans must now answer questions about, whether in the halls of Congress or on the campaign trail. A cadre of top Republicans has pushed back on the idea,...

On one side is Obama, Romney, McConnell, McCain,
al Qaeda, Pelosi and Boehner,

on the other side is Gov. Palin and US Constitution.

Not true. Mark Levin used to hang up on people who suggested impeachment. But just this week he joined in the chorus.

No Mas!

It doesn’t matter anymore which Constitutional conservatives are nominated as Republican candidates for National office, the Republican Party scallawags will fight them tooth and nail. Think McDaniel. Think Akin. And lots more examples over the last few years.

ANY American whose livelihood doesn’t depend on government coffers or political operations coffers, OF COURSE knows President Obama should be impeached. Why he hasn’t already been impeached by the U.S. House is suspicious and mysterious to me.

Impeachment is an inherently political act. It’s ok to say that while Obama deserves to be impeached, it’s still a dumb idea because it undermines the ability to actually effect political change by making arguments that can win.

That’s why I think us Conservatives need to cool it with the impeachment talk. While the House, controlled by the GOP can impeach, there’s no way that the Democrat Senate will vote to remove. And impeachment distracts from the economic arguments that Conservatives CAN ride to victory in this election.

People need to read up on their Uncle Remus. Particularly Brer Rabbit and the Briar Patch. There’s a reason why Liberal commentators and news outlets are playing up the impeachment talk, making sure it gets widely publicized. And it’s not for our benefit.

I guess we could just go down whining.. it worked so well for the Jews in pre-WW2 Europe... and for all those silent during that time..

Looks like those that survived WW2 reproduced and bred more gutless weasels to take their place here.

I’d love for Obama to be impeached and removed from office.

I’d also like Superman’s powers.

As a practical matter, it would do nothing because Harry Reid is certainly not going to remove Obama.

And, even if he did, well, then: Biden.

Sarah Palin can sit on the sidelines all day and cry; “Impeach!”

She has no polticial influence anyway. Never will. Is she still up for that job on The View?

Meanwhile the adults here (like Sen. Ted Cruz) know impeachment is not a viable option.

You sound like the voice of reason but you're actually spreading more FUD on FR, subtly but thick. One fallacy in your reasoning: Many of us are not paying one whit of attention to liberal commentators and lamestream news outlets.

Then why are you posting on a thread about an article written by a Liberal commentator that was published in The Daily Beast?

When you change your opinion regarding this post and add "No GOPe" to your tagline, more FReepers might accept that you truly have Constitutional conservative leanings. Meantime...
