Iraq's Maliki: I won't quit as condition of US strikes against Isis militants
The Guardian ^ | June 19, 2014 | Martin Chulov, Spencer Ackerman

Posted on 06/19/2014 6:40:09 AM PDT by huldah1776

"A spokesman for the Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, has said he will not stand down as a condition of US air strikes against Sunni militants who have made a lightning advance across the country."

******

Dianne Feinstein, the chair of the Senate intelligence committee, told a hearing on Wednesday that Maliki's government "has got to go if you want any reconciliation", and Republican John McCain called for the use of US air power but also urged Obama to "make very clear to Maliki that his time is up".

*****

Obama is said to be still weighing military options, and US officials for days have quietly signalled that a decision is not imminent.

Obama told Maliki that he would have to resign to get Obama (not congress) to help with air strikes. I think the deal should have been, "If you resign, I'll resign." Supposedly Maliki doesn't play well with the opposition, maybe even ignores the Iraq constitution.

Well Dianne, to use your quote, Obama has got to go, too, under that criteria.

Seems he is not making a decision to go after the easiest target in toyotas because he is wheeling and dealing with Iran, probably Russia, and not, I bet, Israel.

Hmmmmm - - - -?

The same thing has been proven to be true about Obama and the US Constitution.

Maliki is a Muslim, and so is Taliban-friendly Obama.

Must be a Muslim thing:
* Do not play well with others.
* Always ignore all Laws.
* Always behave in the most arrogant manner possible.

Isn’t Maliki the democratically elected leader of Iraq?

Why should he this idea of dumping our “ally” as a priority when they are under attack is just kooky bs from the Vietnam war era.

Who the hell is the USA to demand they dump their elected government when they are under military attack? Why would we want that responsibility?

The liberals ALWAYS attack the country we should be helping, instead of the enemy.

When Kuwait was attacked, Bush Sr. didn’t say we were going to reverse the aggression BUT that Kuwait would have to change its government. It wasn’t even brought up.

Can anyone imagine Kerry, Hagel and Obama prosecuting a successful military campaign?

Iraq should ask that we change at least our Secretaries of Defense and State. I’m sure Israel and Saudi Arabia would agree.

If they force him out, Iraq won’t be run by George Washington. The new guy will be bad too. I have problem with members of both parties trying to remake the Mid East willy-nilly. All it does is bring chaos, and make things worse.

Obama is less popular than al-maliki. They just had elections in may. Al-maliki coalition did better than anyone else and picked up 90+ seats. This was only a month ago!!!

pretty much makes a lie of any pretense the Iraqis get to elect their leaders...

imagine if FDR told the French before D day
“elect new leaders and we’ll think about getting involved”

Maliki must have some steel in his spine, many arabs would be off to Switzerland with their families and big bank account

Just another one of Obama’s unilateral, undesired attempts to do a “regime change” in the ME to benefit radical Islamists. Maliki wasn’t great, but then none of them were/are.

I think this is Obama’s version of the Benghazi video, but staged in Iraq: rather than admit we have been successfully attacked by Islamists, he is trying to portray this vicious attack as just a kind of political protest against Maliki. It’s not.

ISIS came in from the outside and has swept through Iraq, and they’re not boasting about killing Shiites or even killing Iraqis in general. They’re boasting because they have, in their eyes, destroyed the US presence and US influence in Iraq. There may be some Sunni tribes or hangers on in Iraq who see this as an opportunity to get in a few licks against their Shiite rivals, and are supporting ISIS for that reason, but ISIS has killed many Sunnis, too. Their crime? Supporting the modern state of Iraq, being a member of the civil services, or even just opposing the imposition of sharia.

If Maliki quits, Obama will probably give Iraq to an ISIS representative, or conversely, will give it to Iran.

What would it accomplish to change leadership now? ....and to whom? A Sunni? Wasn’t Maliki elected?

We can see how great it has been in the other countries that Obama demanded the leadership be removed. More chaos.

This is stupid.

I do believe he has one surviving son from his 2nd wife to continue the dynasty. I’m sure as he gets older some one will push him as a candidate to bring stability to Iraq. I think there is an also another surviving grandson from Qusay too.

He wasn't directly elected because Iraq has a parliamentary system. The elections decided the 328 members of the Council of Representatives who in turn elected Maliki.

Come to think of it, wouldn’t it be convenient for Russia to use Syria ports if travel would be permitted thru Iraq, Iran, and Azerbaijan?

Things are coagulating...

Hey, that was my question!!!

If a democratic government head can be forced to quit
by coercion from Obama then there is little hope for
ourselves.
