Iraq crisis: the jihadist behind the takeover of Mosul - and how America let him go
The Telegraph ^ | 6/11/2014 | Colin Freeman

Posted on 06/11/2014 12:32:57 PM PDT by mojito

The FBI “most wanted” mugshot shows a tough, swarthy figure, his hair in a jailbird crew-cut. The $10 million price on his head, meanwhile, suggests that whoever released him from US custody four years ago may now be regretting it.

Taken during his years as a detainee at the US-run Camp Bucca in southern Iraq, this is the only known photograph of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the new leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and Syria. But while he may lack the photogenic qualities of his hero, Osama bin Laden, he is fast becoming the new poster-boy for the global jihadist movement.

Well-organised and utterly ruthless, the ex-preacher is the driving force behind al-Qaeda’s resurgence throughout Syria and Iraq, putting it at the forefront of the war to topple President Bashar al-Assad and starting a fresh campaign of mayhem against the Western-backed government in Baghdad.

On Tuesday, his forces achieved their biggest coup in Iraq to date, seizing control of government buildings in Mosul, the country's third biggest city.

[....]

Some describe him as a farmer who was arrested by US forces during a mass sweep in 2005, who then became radicalised at Camp Bucca, where many al-Qaeda commanders were held. Others, though, believe he was a radical even during the largely secular era of Saddam Hussein, and became a prominent al-Qaeda player very shortly after the US invasion.

[....]

Why such a ferocious individual was deemed fit for release in 2009 is not known.

"Why such a ferocious individual was deemed fit for release in 2009 is not known."

But I have a few guesses.

Mass beheadings as Al Qaeda consumes Iraq.
The fate of the South Vietnamese tore at my heart after we abandoned them to the communist who brutalized them. Now we see even worse in Iraq. Americans should be proud they got what they wanted...again. FTR I was in Viet Nam and I disagreed with starting the war in Iraq.

It does seem to suggest a vaguely disturbing pattern regarding our so-called president's priorities, does it not?

This is a complete disaster, Vietnam all over again, probably worst. US supplied soldiers dropping their guns and changing out of their uniforms, leaving American humvees, tanks, helicopters, and soon airplanes to the enemy. Government officials and anyone who has had anything to do with the US is fleeing for their lives knowing that we will not protect them. Millions of civilians marching aimlessly away from the oncoming firestorm. An Al-Qaeda state rising in the Middle East out of the ashes of secular dictatorships. And America watches apathetic as the horror unfolds.

History is indeed repeating itself, and the worst is yet to come. Obama and Bush are in the running for worst Presidents in US history.

How hard can it be to drop some ordinance from the air on top of him?

Any bets that our Muslim in Chief will declare his mess a humanitarian crisis and try to bring millions of muzzies here?

This sister of a president should be in prison.

Easy. Most likely, Obama is parachuting in more supplies for him as we speak.

We allowed many Vietnamese allies and their families to flee to US and they assimilated well. I do not think this will be the case with Iraqis, their way of viewing the world is not compatible with our own. I do hope that our allies can atleast escape the horror. Maybe Iran will shelter them or even invade...

I doubt the reason ties were cut was because he was too extreme. I suspect it was a good old power struggle.

Al Queda in Iraq/Syria/Libya/Afghanitan is Sunni Muslim.
Five Taliban terrorist released from GITMO are Sunni Muslim.
Qatari’s babysitting the five Taliban released are Sunni Muslim.
The rebel cause in Syria (supplied/trained by Obama and Qatar) is Sunni Muslim.
Mubarak was deposed to make way for the Muslim Brotherhood which is Sunni Muslim.
The Muslim Brotherhood that exercised editorial control over US federal law enforce manuals in Sunni Muslim.

Could it be Barrack Hussein Obama a Sunni Muslim? ...say it isn’t so.

The only thing missing from this is the airlift of civilians to aircraft carriers offshore.

0bama, for all intents and purposes, acts and behaves exactly like you'd expect a member of the Muslim Brotherhood to act and behave if he was elected president using a deep cover.

In that case you can bet Obama will be bringing thousands of them here.
