Militants have seized the Turkish consulate in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and efforts are under way to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff, two Turkish government sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

Sunni insurgents from an al Qaeda splinter group, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), seized Mosul on Tuesday in a show of strength against Iraq's Shi'ite-led government.

"Certain militant groups in Mosul have been directly contacted to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff," a Turkish government source said, adding there was no immediate information on the status of the diplomats.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held an emergency meeting with the Undersecretary of Turkey's National Intelligence Agency (MIT) and Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay to discuss the developments, Turkish media reported.

The seizure of the consulate comes a day after 28 Turkish truck drivers were abducted by ISIL militants while delivering diesel to a power plant in Mosul.

Iraqi MP: ISIS fighters fly over Mosul in helicopters seized from Iraqi army.

100 Kurdish presidential guards in Tikrit surrounded by ISIS fighters. Given 2-hour ultimatum to leave base.

Haven't they favored the overthrow of Assad? Assad was the only person keeping those terrorists on Turkey's border in check.

What about the NATO situation? Turkey's in NATO. Libya and now Ukraine are not. How can NATO keep working to expand and be the military arm of European bankers and not defend a member? Will NATO have to defend Turkey if the violence spills over?

This seems to be a global chess game that is a battle to define the borders for eight or so regional entities that control the whole world. It has no regard for cultures and lives that are destoyed in the process. JMHO

Obama has had a desire to see the Caliphate come together once again. The Ottoman empire, in his opinion, should never have been defeated and colonized by the west. The Anti-colonialist may just get his way.

Wonderful. It sure didn’t take ISIS long to get those helicopters up, and I think they’re going to be pretty unstoppable now.

How did our spy satellites miss the terrorist buildup?

I got an idea.

It was missed because this attack is a “spontaneous” response to a video.

It’s hard to grasp the magnitude of this - coupled with the fact that nobody here seems to be paying much attention to it. And our intelligence services had no warning of this coming storm?

AQ is getting its own country, one that we lost thousands of lives attempting to defend and restore.

Mosul is now the capital of a Sunni Islamist state.

Iraq and Syria, as we've known them, are over and done with.

Welcome to the new middle east Barry, you broke it, you buy it.
