Sunni militants on Tuesday seized control of military bases and the provincial governor’s building in Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, as police officers and army soldiers abandoned the town and left weapons, vehicles and even their uniforms to the gunmen.
By midday, the militants, believed to belong to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, an extremist group, were in control of much of central and southern Mosul, according to witnesses and local officials. Soldiers who fled the city said the militants had seized a jail, freeing the inmates.
“They took control of everything, and they are everywhere,” said one soldier who fled the city, giving only his first name, Haidar.
As a civilian exodus from the city intensified, the attack amounted to a stunning defeat for government forces, which have spent the past six days trying to beat back a surging militant offensive concentrated in central and northern Iraq. In Mosul, along with the cities of Samarra and Ramadi, the militants have struck at will, storming police stations, government offices and even a university.

the really sad thing is that no soldiers at all should have died in Iraq. We should have bombed them back to the stoneage from 30,000 feet.

“When the battle got tough in the city of Mosul, the troops dropped their weapons and abandoned their posts, making it an easy prey for the terrorists,” he told a televised news conference in Baghdad.
All key facilities are now controlled by the insurgents, including the airport and the prisons, said Nujaifi, who is from Mosul.
“Everything is fallen. It’s a crisis,” he said, appealing for international and government help to retake the city. “Having these terrorist groups control a city in the heart of Iraq threatens not only Iraq but the entire region.”
In declaring the state of emergency in a televised speech, Maliki called on “all powers — political, financial and popular — to stop the terrorism and bring life to normal in the areas controlled by the terrorists in Mosul or any other city.”
He said his government has created a special Crisis Unit to deal with the situation and warned that punishment would be meted out to “those who were reckless and those who did not rise to the challenge” of the attack on Mosul.
The speed with which one of Iraq’s biggest cities has fallen under militant control is striking and suggests the U.S.-trained Iraqi security forces are even more vulnerable than had previously been thought.

Actually, ISIS was kicked out of Al Qaeda for being too fanatical for their slaughter of fellow Islamists in Syria! Hard to imagine, but true!
Muslims are the most chicken-sh*t creatures on the face of the earth.
Better yet, we should've left Saddam Hussein in place. Psychotic as he and his sons were, they were far preferable to the madness that's gripping that country now. The Ba'athists were the only entity that could keep a lid on the jihadis.
