Welcome To Brazil: Home Of $35 Pizzas
The Daily Caller ^ | June 8 2014 | Justin Smith

Those traveling to Brazil this summer to the World Cup better bring their credit cards.

Brazil has become one of the most expensive country’s in the world, and it’s shocking those visiting for the World Cup expecting low prices due to the country’s astounding poverty rate. Unlike the countries surrounding Brazil, where American and European money seems to last forever, Brazil is astoundingly pricey.

Pizza in Rio commonly sells for $35, and cheeseburgers go for upwards of $17. The steep prices in Brazil are commonly referred to as “Brazil Cost,” the combination of high taxes and import tariffs coupled with an inefficient government and crumbling infrastructure.

Brazil is naturally expensive, however, when those high prices are coupled with the World Cup, expenses go through the roof. A hotel room in Rio averages $445 a night, add in food and other expenses and a person will spend an average of amount of $682 a day. Even in less expensive cities such as Sao Paolo, a person will spend an average $477 a day.

Tickets to games are going to cost you even more. According to ticket search engine SeatGeek, tickets for the World Cup final in Rio are fetching upwards of $5,956. To put this in perspective, fans paid $2,536 on average to attend last years Super Bowl.

Seriously?!? OMG...who remembers meals you'd pay $100 for but could buy in the nicest restaurant in Rio for $7?!?

My buddies used to think Clinton was a good president. I pointed out his policies were to the left of Lula. Now they have commie Dilma and you should see the comments they make now.

Good to see them realize the crushing horror of socialism, but too late.

You can eat well in Brazil, if you "go Brazilian". Forget the pizza and cheeseburgers. Go to their equivalent of a cafeteria buffet.

A good place will have a large selection of vegetables, salad, cheese, cold cuts, bread, etc. Then, you can walk up to the grill and ask them for chicken or beef prepared several different ways.

When you check out, you weigh your plate. You are charged a set price per 100 grams.

I've spent a few weeks at a time in Brazil. I ate better there than any trip I've taken. Taking the exchange rate into account (currently $0.44 USD / 1.00 Brazilian real), you can get a great meal for $5-$6 apiece.

Brazil is naturally expensive

Isn't that an extremely interesting phrase?

Good observations. Who goes to Brazil and goes looking for a Big Mac? And you can probably get a decent, reasonably priced pizza if you can find Rio’s Italian neighborhoods (and don’t get killed).

I have heard that imported electronic equipment and consumer products are absurdly expensive in Brazil.

Should have chosen Santiago, Chile.

Place is awesome and the prices are stupid easy on the wallet.

I do understand they were competing with more than one million prostitutes but heck, they got some really beautiful women all bu themselves.

That is definitely true. There's a 100% tariff on important electronics and electronic devices. I remember when an iPod was the equivalent of $300, when you could buy them in the US for $100.

The purpose is to "encourage" manufacturers to set up manufacturing in Brazil. Apple finally did so a year or so ago, so the price of iPhones has come down. I'm not sure if they manufacture iPads or MacBooks there.

They do. The US restaurant chain may not be a subsidiary, though -- the name may simply be licensed.

But even in Brazil, Fogo de Chao is absurdly expensive. There are plenty of other churrascaria (not sure of the plural form) in Brazil that are just as good, for a fraction of the price.

I have two exchange student kids from Brazil that are now grown up to mature adults. They come to the states at least twice a year simply to buy stuff. They live in Sao Paulo, a city of 22 million people

High on the list of to buy are Victoria’s Secrets and Pet Smart stuff. They also bought 5 Apple TV devices and two Ipads

Then there are the Freepers here who pretty much want America to implement trade policies like those of Brazil that would

Brazil’s economic freedom score is 56.9, making its economy the 114th freest in the 2014 Index. Its score is 0.8 point worse than last year, with declines in labor freedom, monetary freedom, fiscal freedom, and trade freedom. Brazil is ranked 20th out of 29 countries in the South and Central America/Caribbean region, and its overall score is below the world average.

I guess they didn’t learn from their hyper-inflation problem years back.
