De Blasio Announces Affordable Housing Plan

The $41 Billion Program Will Create Units for More Than 500,000 New Yorkers

By WSJ Staff Updated May 5, 2014 10:46 a.m. ET

Mayor Bill de Blasio detailed a wide-ranging plan to build 200,000 new affordable housing units in New York City in 10 years, calling it a "fundamental plan to reduce income inequality."

Those who benefit from the plan "won't be living doubled up with friends…they won't be living in homeless shelters," Mr. de Blasio said at a news conference in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. The plan would provide housing to service more than 500,000 New Yorkers, he said.

He called the $41 billion program "the largest ever initiated in the history of this city."

Doesn’t New York City already have many billions of dollars in unfunded liabilities?

I’m guessing these Projects will be placed throughout the wealthiest areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

My intuition tells me a large chunk of the $41 bil isn’t gonna be from NYS or NYC, but from Uncle Sam (or Aunt Hillary as it will be known after Jan 2017).

He’ll spend a lot of New Yorkers money on beautiful buildings that will look like shitholes within 2 years just like the welfare OCEAN FRONT buildings in Far Rockaway Queens.

Leeches don’t take care of their homes.

what are the chances this will be nipped in the bud?

With 200,000 new housing units, NYC is bound to tip over before Guam does.

Ok, let’s do a little math. This comes out to $82,000 per person. I don’t know how he defines “unit”, but if each unit houses 2.5 people, we now are up to about 200,000 units at a little over $200,000 per unit. Given the limited availability of land in New York City, these would have to be some sort of high-rise tenements. If each building were 20 stories high and had 20 units per floor, that would take 500 buildings of high density housing. That’s going to displace a lot of existing development. Given the history of these kinds of projects, that’s going to be 500 crime-infested pigstys in about 20 years.

Comrade De Blasio will pull out his bag of goodies paid for by the productive, wealth-creating serfs that he now rules over. You sure know how to pick ‘em, NYC.

I don’t see it here but there was a article a while back about new yorkers building a large amount of 700 sq ft apartments. This is nowhere near large enough to raise children. More for the demographic implosion.

In Seattle, the low-income housing looks like shitholes right out of the box, so I can imagine what they'll look like in 20 years.
