That is simply how it works these days. The "guaranteed" student loan racket came to be, then inflation commenced in university systems to maximize the absorption of those newly available funds. The schemes became essentially one at some point, and they inflate and perpetuate one another by default, and that is the current price of admission.

Though I think doubt is beginning to arise in people as to the value of those gold plated degrees, and the wisdom of starting out with such high debt burdens.

They were there when my wife and I came of age. I didn't take any myself and my wife's loans are about 20 years old and her balance is finally down to just a couple Gs, but some people actually don't live to see the day their loans are paid off.
