“The point is not vengeance, the point is termination.”

If a procedure were codified of inflicting the same damage on the perpetrator as was inflicted on the victim, the procedure being lawfully followed, with the purpose being prevention of future atrocities, would that be vindictive savagery?

Just asking.

I’d use a rope or bullet rather than poison.

Whatever method used, I’d send the bill to the next of kin.

Yes, because "same damage as was inflicted on the victim" is irrelevant to "preventing future atrocities" where the penalty of death is concerned.

No criminal, successfully executed, has committed further atrocities from lack of inflicted damage during his execution.

I would also point out that codified and lawfully followed are meaningless here. There are numerous firearms laws which are "codified" and "lawfully followed" by the forces of the State yet which violate the Constitution we permit said State to exist within the confines of.

I am not unsympathetic to those who mourn, seek vengeance, and wish an eye for an eye. That is achievable, but not within a free republic under our current Constitution.

I would say the same thing to those who seek to disarm Americans: amend the Constitution if that is what you truly seek.

“....but not under a free republic with our present constitution.”

Definition of cruel and unusual.

Definition of cruel and unusual.

It's subjective. Like art or pornography.

If there is to be an execution, I believe it should be swift, humane, and as painless (via swiftness) as possible. Firing squad or quick decapitation has long been used, and are relatively painless. The purpose in preventing pain is to prevent degradation of the society, not in the comfort of the condemned.

That's why the upper class were beheaded, and why the lower class was hung, drawn and quartered. That's why officers got a firing squad and not hanging. It's about reinforcing the social order, not about making it easier on your executionee.

Where we as a society have tripped up is in trying to be sterile and painless and peaceful and gentle and calm and kind and enlightened about putting a human being to death. It's a futile effort.

If you are going to kill, kill. Don't make a bloody nor a complicated mess of it. If you are going to put something down - whether a rabid dog or a criminal human - it's graceless, classless and vulgar to descend to the dramatic level of a pirate.

End them. Bury them. Move the culture on.

Don't make a fuss about it.

“Don’t make a fuss about it.”

Agreed, but somethings’s missing.

Gonna have to think about it and make that burning smell.

IMHO
