Hawaii lawmakers voted late on Tuesday to raise the U.S. state's hourly minimum wage to $10.10 from the federal minimum $7.25 at a time of heated national debate over wages and rising income inequality.
The new rate brings the Pacific state into line with the hourly wage U.S. President Barack Obama has pushed at a federal level, where the current rate stands at $7.25. Legislation to raise the national minimum wage has stalled in Congress.
In Hawaii, as at the national level, proposed increases have
drawn strong opposition from some business owners, lobby groups, and economists, who say it will raise costs and kill jobs.
Hawaii now joins California, Maryland, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C., in passing legislation to raise their state minimum wage over time to, or above, the $10 hourly mark, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Much of the Hawaii wage debate has centered on tips. Under the measure, employers of tipped workers making less than $17.10 per hour with tips would be required to pay the minimum of $10.10 per hour. For workers making more than $17.10 per hour, employers can deduct a $.75 tip credit from the wage.
Under the current $7.25 hourly rate, the tip credit is $.25 per hour for those workers making at least $7.75 an hour.

I think that it’s only fair to allow the employers to vote for taking this increase out of the commie lib politicians’ wages to make up the difference. The problem with communists is that they love to spend OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY to keep their useless @$$es in “powah”.
cheap bastards
So, I wonder what the favored dog food brand is going to be among retired non-government Hawaiian seniors?
Pass the word.
It should be a state decision. HI may be able to absorb the extra costs by just passing the cost on to the Hoales.
Hawaii's personal income tax system consists of twelve brackets and a top rate of 11%. That rate ranks 2nd highest among states levying an individual income tax. Hawaii's state and local income tax collections per person were $1127 in 2012 which ranked 10th highest nationally.

Well, good for Hawaii. That’s the state’s choice.
Seeing as how their cost of living is much greater than many other states, perhaps it’s appropriate. For them. Not us.
You’re telling me? Hawaii is well known as tax hell.
Also there is a sales tax and a general excise tax on services. Property tax too, of course.
Sleep on the beach, wake up, go back to work. Repeat as necessary.
Guess they'll have to borrow money so they can afford college.
There still won't be any jobs after they graduate, but at least they'll have a degree and thousands of dollars of debt.
Harder for a business to leave Hawaii. Though it will depresss the local economy9my even more and probably boost federal welfare spending.
Also there is a sales tax and a general excise tax on services. Property tax too, of course.
And it's all deductible, effectively forcing the rest of the country to subsidize their high taxes.
Gee, what do I have to do to get a 39% increase? Does the gravy train stop here so I can get aboard?
I read that the average price of milk in Hawaii is $7. Guess they want to pay more for products like that.
The economy is already crap here. This won’t make much of a difference. The idiots in Nonolulu will simply vote more welfare. Which the will get from the other 49 states.
Oh good, so Obama can make 10.10 an hour flipping burgers when he finish ruining America and need a real job.
