Violence flares in Ukraine, deepening 'Iron Curtain' crisis (THREATENS ASTRONAUTS)

From Yahoo News: Lugansk (Ukraine) (AFP) - Fresh violence erupted in eastern Ukraine Tuesday as thousands of pro-Russian protesters stormed key buildings, escalating the crisis after Moscow hit back at "Iron Curtain"-style Western sanctions.

A mob spearheaded by around 30 men carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles and grenade-launchers attacked the regional police headquarters in Lugansk, raising the heat in the worst East-West confrontation since the Cold War.

They had earlier seized the regional prosecutors' office, tearing down the Ukrainian flag and replacing it with that of Russia, which the West blames for stoking the violence in the ex-Soviet Republic.

More than a dozen towns and cities in the east have now fallen to pro-Russian rebels, who see the Western-backed leaders in Kiev as illegitimate "fascists" and want either independence or outright accession to Russia.

drudge headline -> RUSSIA THREATENS ASTRONAUTS OVER SANCTIONS...

I asked this question when we first started threatening Russia. What about the Space Station and our Astronauts? Putin was already at the the extortionist rate of 70 million per trip (Thank you Mr. Flexibility Obama and getting rid of our Space Shuttle), now he had us over the atmospheric barrel. (Thanks Obama voters, you worthless scum).

The Russians are pushing the reset button on American manned space flight. We should push the reset button on our contributions to the International Space Station program.

Yeah, gee... If only we had a program where we could send Americans into orbit... That would be handy... We could send them up on rockets into space. We could call it the “space program”. That would be so cool.

We should be dumping all support of that useless motel 6 in LEO, at any rate.

All the Russian speaking Cosmonauts on the ISS want it to be totally a Russian station. It will be renamed Vlad I.

I wonder if we really had to, we can somehow take one of the shuttles out of retirement to pick them up and how long it would take. I even woinder if we can get one of the old Apollos that were nver used to send up if we had to. I remember seeing a movie called "Marooned" (1969) starring Richard Crenna, James FRanciscus, Gregory Peck and David Janssen where Janssen was sent up in a hastily modified Apollo converted into a space glider to rescue the three astronauts stranded in space. I also remember even the Russians diverted one of their Vokshods to help the astronauts too.

Not a chance. It isn't just the shuttle, it is the ground systems, boosters, and personnel, the latter having been dismissed, and the former simply unavailable.

The only thing that will threaten anything with that program will be if the Russians refuse to take up any more of our increment crews to the ISS...

Those up there now will be brought back at the end of their hitch, land and sent home back to the USA...

At which point the ISS no longer can be called “International”, it will simply be the Russian Space Station...This has already been factored in the plan for a few more years down the road...

Why do you think the service life and “mission” of the current ISS has been extended for a few more years...

Pretty soon things will start to seriously fail, and the replacement ORU’s will be hard to get up there and be swapped if all you have are the Soyuz TMA craft...They can only carry so much...

NASA and our government are spending bundles of money to support the Dragon launch system to get things done, that our country can support...The Japanese are pretty much done with all their HII launches to the station, the ESA is no longer actively supporting this orbiting political pimple...

So who does that leave???

Oh, yeah...The Russians...And our country no longer will have a place to go, even if we manage to get a man rated vehicle to continue our space program...

The Russians will charge US a docking fee that will rival your 70 million a body fare on their vehicle...

This is what you get when you have an amateur political community organizer elected by stupid people in this country who have NO clue to bettering our own countries scientific adventures and discoveries...

But hey, I only works for NASA, my family worked for NASA for over 35 years...

I keep telling folks I know that are still down the street working there, to make sure you turn out the lights, and lock the doors before your leave JSC...

I have almost no idea what it is they think they are doing there, if we lose the ISS program, from these political idiots...

Me too. It was an interesting premise where a private enterprise was behind space exploration and salvage. IIRC, I think it was the last show made by Jack Webb who was Sgt. Friday in Dragnet.
