Kidnapped: Pro-Russian Gunmen Are Holding This U.S. Journalist Hostage

An American journalist for Vice News is being held captive by pro-Russian gunmen following his reporting on the turmoil in Ukraine.

Simon Ostrovsky had covered the conflict over Crimea for weeks and went missing Tuesday. His disappearance is the latest example of a crackdown on journalists by Russia and its supporters, prompting a warning from the U.S. State Department.

“We call on Russia to use its influence with these groups to secure the immediate and safe release of all hostages in eastern Ukraine,” said spokeswoman Jen Psaki, who noted that such actions are in violation of a commitment by Russia and Ukraine made last week in Geneva.

A spokeswoman for the pro-Russian insurgents told the Associated Press that Ostrovsky was “suspected of bad activities.” She added, “He’s with us. He’s fine.”

Last month, a Bulgarian journalist and other reporters were held at gunpoint in Crimea. That followed the closure of Black Sea TV, Crimea’s only independent channel. Other journalists have been confronted by armed men, beaten and detained.

VICE Media is an Uber-lib Internet media/news group targeted to the Hipster crowd, that used to be based in Montreal, and is now in Brooklyn.

They use wild stunts to gain attention, and will likely have an IPO soon. These are the people who PAID Dennis Rodman to go to North Korea last year.

Fox Media supposedly has a 5% Stake, and supposedly Omidyar is involved, too. They will likely have an IPO soon.

At least they know who their enemies are!

With luck they will send him to Siberia in a skinny bathing suit!

I certainly hope so. With “un”luck, he’ll end up face down in a ditch somewhere with a bullet in the back of his skull. But if that sort of thing appeals to you . . . .

“Vice” is part of the enemedia?

Never heard of "Vice". Have heard of "journalists", and darned few are on our side. Scratch that, darned few even exist! Most are just propagandists.

Mr. Ostrovsky, a former BBC and Al Jazeera correspondent who wrote for The Moscow Times a decade ago

Look at that—the aggressive stance, the belligerent attitude. That Russian militia member was only defending himself from further assault.

Mr. Ostrovsky was in custody, according to a report from the Russian news site Gazeta, translated by The Interpreter. The report also said that the separatist leader appeared to answer a call from Mr. Ostrovsky’s family in front of journalists.

The press conference was briefly interrupted when the journalists’ parents rang Ponomarev, the leader of the Slavyansk militia, who gave assurances that their son was doing well.

Vice News is a Soros/CIA front. Just ask the Russians.

Hey, the Russkies warned our government about the Tsarnaev brothers, and our government didn't listen. Maybe they're right!

Brand new channel, launched only since the Maidan protests began. A Spin-off of Vice magazine, a hard-core leftist publication with punk inclinations, created by a Montreal Muslim, named Suroosh Alvi, with funding by the Canadian labor socialists.

His reports from Ukraine are absolutely amazing, he is always right in the middle of the maelstrom, brave journalist of the old variety.

It is kind of funny how more than a few posters here are basically traditional fascists who think that kidnapping journalists to censor news is a good tactic. I wish these people would get the hell out of the US and move to Russia where they will no longer be bothered by pesky freedom of the press.

Also hilarious to call a guy running around

Yep, any news channel that does not faithfully transcribe Kremlin press releases is run by Soros/CIA/Mossad. How dare this guy use a camera to show people what is going on? Thank God the brave but peaceful protesters arrested him for “bad activities”.

Here he is again with that mystery Stay Puff soldier that seems to be all over the place.

In this photo taken on Sunday, April 13, Simon Ostrovsky, right, stands next to a Pro-Russian gunman at a seized police station in the eastern Ukraine town of Slovyansk. Ostrovsky, a journalist for VICE News, has not been seen since early Tuesday.

Wonder if he's still smirking.
