About 80 people showed up at a meeting in Aspen on Thursday on whether the BLM should void 65 oil and gas leases in the region, including 25 in the Thompson Divide area.
Two-thirds of the way through the meeting in the basement of the Pitkin County Library, every person who had spoke urged the 13 BLM officials in attendance to cancel the leases, which were first authorized in a 1993 environmental impact statement.
“We’re very much in favor of voiding the leases, specifically within the Thompson Divide area,” said Rob Ittner, the chair of the Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners.
Ittner said all five county commissioners strongly agreed that the Thompson Divide area “needs to be protected.”
The Thompson Divide area gets its names from Thompson and Divide creeks and is defined by conservation organizations such as Wilderness Workshop and the Thompson Divide Coalition as including 221,500 acres of land, including 88,100 acres in Pitkin County.
The meeting was a formal scoping meeting for the BLM, which is preparing an environmental impact statement on the leases to correct a mistake made under the National Environmental Policy Act when the leases were first approved by the BLM.
The leases are all on Forest Service land, mainly in an arc between Carbondale and DeBeque, and were designated by the agency as appropriate for leasing in the last two management plans for the White River National Forest. The BLM manages the mineral rights under the Forest Service land and so also manages the leases.
The EIS is not looking at the issue of future leases being created by the BLM, only the 65 existing leases in question. Of the 25 leases in the Thompson Divide area, seven are held by Ursa Resources and 18 are held by SG Interests.

Those people are like watermelons, green on the outside and red on the inside. They want to de-industrialize America. They are working to weaken America in order to advance world wide communism.
Soooooo. Our good elitists meet in Aspen to tell the rest of us chumps that we don’t need oil or gas because THEY have determined NIMBY. Of course these few dozen people that showed up couldn’t care less what a gallon of gasoline costs, nor do they care how much it costs to heat their gargantuan houses. Let them eat ice cubes while they ride a public bus.
Yup. The elite. They want to live in luxury in their warm cozy wooden homes, dressed in fine leather and sleeping on smooth linens, eating and enjoying their beef and farm fresh produce, eggs, butter, bread and fresh milk, enjoying fine wine and cheese and drive around in their expensive cars on paved roads. But they don’t want to be bothered or even think about the hardworking loggers, drillers, miners, ranchers, farmers, producers, processors, manufacturers, construction contractors, transporters, etc, who make it all possible. Obama promises to provide all this stuff by magic.
Industry and capitalism and fiercely independent hardworking people built this great country and provides our high standard of living. Obama and the elite progressives are bound and determined to destroy it.
All power generating plants that use oil and gas to supply electricity to the state of Colorado should power down their plants, and put in ad in all of the Colorado newspapers for tomorrow (since very few will have power to turn on their TV's) and state that as of now, they will no longer be using such 'dirty' fuels to keep the lights on.
I want to see the giant crying moaning shitstorm of humanity that will make its way toward the power plants to beg them to start up the juice again.
Pain is the ultimate motivator. No one takes their hand off of a hot stove because it tickles. They do it because it hurts. Make these stupid decisions hurt.

A stretch of largely vacant federal lands in Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado may hold more recoverable oil than all the rest of the world put together
The government owning all this land is socialism/communism . this land should be returned to private companies so that they can develop the vast oil resources

Nevada or individuals own that land not the federal government. that is pure marxism/socialism(fed owning all that land in Nevada and other states). the gov are using that land for environmentalism(communism/marxism) when private industry like that rancher Bundy, oil companies and others could be using it to produce
Oil is almost never used to generate electric power. When it is, it is usually refinery “leftovers”, residual oil or petroleum coke. The heavies left after fuels like gasoline and diesel are removed.
In Colorado, especially this part of Colorado, there is a lot more money to be made off the tourist business than there is off the oil business.
The state of Colorado would get half the royalty on these federal lands, but they have no input on setting the royalties or setting environmental standards.
This is not to say that there are not areas in CO, that are not tourist areas, that would be more welcoming to O&G development.
Then you look at drilling offshore federal waters in FL, CA, etc. These states don't make a dime off the oil but a spill can crash their coastal tourist economy. That's why only four states allow offshore drilling, and those four states don't have much of a coastal tourist business.
Because those tourists don’t want electricity or heat. Right? And they’d never refill their cars in Colorado. Or fill those airplanes for the flight out. Right?
NIMBY’s should freeze in the dark.
