U.S. to trim air, sea and land nuke launchers under U.S.-Russia treaty: officials 11:32am EDT

By David Alexander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will scale back its land, sea and air nuclear missile launchers under a New START treaty with Russia but not retire a ballistic missile squadron as some lawmakers had expected, U.S. officials told Reuters.

The U.S. military will disable four missile launch tubes on each of its 14 U.S. nuclear submarines, convert 30 B-52 nuclear bombers to conventional use and empty 50 intercontinental ballistic missile silos, senior administration officials said on condition of anonymity.

The plan is expected to be formally announced on Tuesday.

One official said the government wanted to maintain flexibility across its land, sea and air weapons systems. "It provides us a bit of a hedge," said the official.

The New START treaty reached in President Barack Obama's first term called for cuts in the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads in the United States and Russia to 1,550 apiece by 2018, down from the previous ceiling of 2,200. It was agreed in 2010 and went into force on February 5, 2011.

Treasonous, traitorous bastage.

Perhaps not just him, did this not have to be agreed upon in the Senate too? Perhaps they need a new vote in light of current events.

One day in the not too distant future, we’ll wonder how we missed all of the obvious evidence that our country had been taken over by the Soviets.

I don’t have to.

The Soviets inserted their ideology of class conflict into the minds of disaffected youths in the 50s and 60s. Then through attrition of older traditionalists coupled with exploiting moral and character weaknesses in the upper class

Jan. 20, 2009?

You need to go back to GHW Bush when the first Start Treaty was ratified.

And you need to go back even further.

Ronald Reagan campaigned on Nuke arms reduction which he called SALT3, so as to build on Nixon and Carter. And much of the ground work for the first START was laid in Reagans second term.

Is 5000 nukes not enough?

Treasonous, traitorous bastage.

And we have a worthless congress that will let him get away with it.
They are true enablers of treason and just as guilty.

What kind of idiots write this? A Minuteman squadron is 50 missile launch facilities.

'The president does not need ratification as all military forces are under his command.'

Not true. He is merely the CiC. That is all.

The vast control of the military is in the hands of Congress. Only Congress has the authority to set the size of the military and regulate the rules and regulations of the military.

Surely you know the difference between a president who seeks to fundamentally transform this country into a Marxist authoritarian hellhole and who doesn’t have this country’s best interests at heart.......and 2 presidents who sought to reduce our nuclear tensions with Russia through negotiated reduction agreements.

Well, that’s a relief. We can afford to do this now that North Korea and Iran have given up their nuclear weapons programs. Uh...they have, right?

"Surely you know the difference"

Of course I know the differences. But I don't agree with how you might want to frame the differences.

In this particular issue, the differences fall along foreign policy doctrinal lines. Not along political party lines

And one can say it as just one of the many cracks/conflicts in the GOP. In this case it is Realists versus NeoCons. There are so many conflicts in the GOP so it is hard to tell which is the worst.

You may want this to be about Republicans versus Democrats but it is really about Republicans versus Republicans.

We need to retake the Senate and stop this junk. This was done on the Dem/Dem/Obama watch.
