Turn: TV Review
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | 4/6/2014 | Tim Goodman

AMC's latest drama tries to set up a grand story of America's first spy ring but forgets to be exciting in the process.

Having series so great or so popular that nobody seems to notice how much you flounder when they're not on is a luxury (or is it a mystery?) that AMC must be praying doesn’t go away anytime soon. Its latest series, the Revolutionary War spy drama Turn, may eventually turn into something worth talking about, but the 90-minute premiere seems so intent on setting up Something Really Big For Later that it forgets to be compelling in the moment. That’s a problem. Not just for Turn, but for any scripted series that launches these days. The mantra of yesterday is the mantra of today and tomorrow in the new world of television: Thrill or be killed.

This is a bs review that I'm posting as a jumping off point for some Freviews. I enjoyed Turn, but the endless commercials just about ruined it.

I thought it was pretty good. I set my DVR to record the series. I fast forward through all of the commericals.

So the Hollywood reporter disses it, but actual viewers are aggravated by all the commercials.

Cognitive Di$$onance, anyone?

It was OK. Didn’t do quite enough to establish and differentiate the main characters. I’m just shocked that any network would do a series about the Revolutionary War. Pretty risky, money-wise....

I thought it was pretty good, and I have heard this episode was a set-up for some awesome episodes in the coming weeks.

Because every character was historic, I Binged all their biographies. Turning Captain John Graves Simcoe into a vicious psychopath was a huge injustice. Simcoe was an outstanding commander, and later on as Lt. Governor of Upper Canada he abolished slavery in his territory.

What I'm seeing is, this is the first drama since Gone With The Wind where slaveholders were glorified, and their slaves seemed glad to be working for master like in GWTW and Birth Of A Nation. I'm wondering if this is a new tack by today's Left to re-enslave black people (they've already enslaved them through Government aid, and now they might just try to complete the trifecta).

We DVR’rd the show. My 17yr old daughter watched it with me. She liked it, me too. I’m hoping it will be a good series to watch.

I guess there weren’t enough explosions and car chases for the reviewer? I enjoyed it, just for the history, alone. I remember the History Channel briefly mentioning the spy ring during its own mulit-part series on the Revolution, so I was eager to see this last night. I will continue to watch.

Not thrilling enough - is that modern speak for not enough naked lesbians?

Frankly, I’m so done with the let’s-how-deviant-we-can-get tv we have nowadays that I pay no attention to reviews or hype anymore. People are so jaded - if it’s not creepy, it can’t seem to keep their interest. When you turn on real crime shows they are boring by comparison.

I’ll give this one a chance. Sounds good.

I watched it and enjoyed it.

According to zap2it.com, it had about 3 million viewership. Typical for a cable-only series.

Yikes !  Talk about yer time warp !

Had forgotten she actually did say it backwards .. LOL

And in retrospect, DvD did a pretty fair Cockney, too !

Thanks for the link FP, but oh my . . watch that clip, or perhaps this one The Sound of Music - Maria and the Captain Dance the Laendler, then go peek again at the sidebar stories in here.

It tempts tears from a grown man . . .

Ditto. DVR is your friend. Really enjoyed it. What kept coming home was the commitment to liberty that sparked this great Nation and the constant threat of being discovered.

This is NOT a thread hijack, but if it is it's FP's fault !

But then I see something like this  Singing Flash Mob Overwhelms Soldier  and know that the bastards haven't beat us yet, and aren't likely to in my lifetime !

(and even Kalifornia's not completely lost yet:  Flash Mob - "proud to be an american" )

I wanted to like it, and will continue giving it a try, but it was not that compelling, the lead was not that interesting, the love triangle was meh (although the brunette is very hot). They should have focused more on the guy in Washington’s army who started it. Hopefully it will get better.
