WaPo's Kathleen Parker Suggests People with Southern Accents Not 'Smart' or 'Sophisticated'

After NBC's "Meet The Press" host David Gregory ran an anti-ObamaCare ad targeting Sen. Mark Pryor from Arkansas featuring a couple with a southern accents questioning the confusing nature of the Affordable Care Act, Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker objected to Americans for Prosperity using people with southern accents in political ads running in Arkansas:

"I think you could find someone who doesn't have a southern accent who is confused by this act," Parker said. "We always seem to find the character who seems a little countrified, who can't just fathom this. You know there there are plenty of smart sophisticated people equally hazy about what is really going on."

I don't seem to recall any comment from Parker when Hillary Clinton gave her little Selma speech while Senator of New York.

The article sounds just the opposite of the title.

Visualize the uproar if some Republican said that about how blacks talk.

Thank you for posting this.

Let me get this straight - Parker protests Southern accents for an ad run in Arkansas. Has she ever been to fly-over country? I think not.

As a Northeastern friend once told me, “You can’t fool me. Just because you talk slow doesn’t mean you think slow!”

I once had a client that had a dispute with Prudential Insurance Company, who processed claims in New Jersey. When the rep got insolent, rude, demeaning, and continually interrupted me, I told her that when I filed suit in Comanche County Oklahoma, and we put 24 eyes, and 24 ears in the jury box, they would understand me perfectly. In fact, I told her, people in Comanche County don’t like “Yankees.” They settled.

In 2007 before Obama began picking up steam, Parker called Hillary “well qualified” to be president. Hillary is only maybe slightly less leftist than Obama. Yet, Parker is still called a conservative by some people.

This is kinda comical. It’s how I feel about the northeastern accent.

Meanwhile, all the smart guys in short sleeve white dress shirts and ties in Apollo 13 had southern accents.

I am originally from Nebraska but have been in Texas since 1985 and I don’t have much of any accent. But I do have to talk on the phone frequently with people on the east coast. On those occasions I really lay on the Texan accent on purpose and pepper it with lots of “Yes ma’am” and “You betcha” responses. Makes my day. Have also on occasion said, “Well, bless your heart and thank you so much for the info.”

“I think you could find someone who doesn’t have a southern accent who is confused by this act,”

What she is saying is that it’s not just people with southern accents who are confused. It’s smart people too.

So southerners who don’t speak with a southern accent like Sheila Jackson Lee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Alan Grayson are examples of artificial intelligence.
